One woman has been killed and three others injured—one critically—after the Moroccan navy opened fire on a boat carrying migrants. The Northern Observatory for Human Rights says the woman was 22, and one of the injured people has reportedly had an arm amputated. Morocco’s interior ministry insisted a patrol was “forced” to open fire on the speedboat because the captain had “refused to obey.” One official said the people on the speedboat were lying down and could not be seen. A total of 25 people were reportedly on board, including Spanish human traffickers. So far in 2018, Morocco says it has stopped 54,000 attempts by migrants trying to illegally cross from the Mediterranean into Europe.
