Joanne Chesimard, a former member of the Black Liberation Army who allegedly shot dead a state trooper on the New Jersey Turnpike 40 years ago, has been named to the FBI’s “Most Wanted Terrorists” list. Chesimard, 65, has the dubious distinction of being the first woman on the list, which was created by the FBI in 2001. Chesimard was eventually arrested and convicted of murdering the state trooper, but escaped from prison in 1979. She’s been on the lam ever since, though authorities believe she’s been hiding out in Cuba since 1984, which in the past has granted asylum to American fugitives who fit the “revolutionary” mold.
