Women Sue ‘Price Fixing’ in Egg Donations

SHOW ME THE MONEY

Call $10,000 cap illegal.

A group of women is suing in federal court for what they allege is illegal price fixing when it comes to how much they may sell their eggs for. Industry guidelines suggest no one receive more than $10,000 for donating eggs; women point out there is no such price limit on sperm donations. The New York Times notes the market for eggs, especially from women in their twenties, is booming as more women wait longer to start families. That increase in demand, the plaintiffs say, should allow for an increase in price. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine, however, says a price cap helps ensure poorer women will not donate eggs purely for price reasons.
