Wonder Woman is getting a makeover for the 600th issue of her monthly series, published by DC Comics. The change—including a more modest costume—is meant to compliment a makeover of her backstory. The series’ new writer, J. Michael Straczynski, has reimagined the heroine’s childhood: instead of growing up on Paradise Island with her mom, she is smuggled away as a baby. Straczynski said the outfit change was important to give the heroine a tougher, more modern look. (Wonder Woman’s costume hadn’t change since the 1940s.) The new costume features a more subtle “W” logo, black tights and boots, and a midnight blue jacket—a much darker look than the earlier bright red bustier and pale blue hot pants.
