The 2010 World Cup is under way: Mexico kicked off the ball against South Africa at 10 a.m. with the vuvuzelas blazing in the stands. It wasn’t all celebration, however, as Nelson Mandela canceled his scheduled appearance at the opening ceremonies after his 13-year-old great-grandaughter was killed in a car crash while returning from a pre-tournament concert. The Nelson Mandela Foundation said the accident “made it inappropriate” for Mandela, 91, to attend the ceremonies. The driver of the car that killed Mandela’s relative has been arrested and charged with drunk driving.
