One million gather in Times Square.

Time to re-up the gym membership and other resolutions: America welcomed the New Year on Friday night, with 1 million partiers in New York’s Times Square leading the celebration. People began arriving there for the famous ball drop 16 hours before midnight. Rio de Janeiro’s celebration was even larger, with 2 million people gathering for fireworks at Copacabana Beach. American Samoa, the tiny Pacific Island of just 65,000 people, was the last place in the world to ring in 2011, celebrating the New Year six hours behind New York.
