The Turkish gunman who shot and wounded former John Paul II in 1981 traveled to St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday to lay white flowers at the tomb of the former pope. The visit from Mehmet Ali Agca came as a surprise, according to a Vatican spokesman. It is believed to be his first time in the Vatican since the assassination attempt.
