WSJ Investigated for Bribery Claims

At least you can’t accuse them of trying to cover it up. The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that the U.S. Justice Department investigated claims last year that at least one employee of the paper’s China news bureau bribed local officials for information. The investigation was part of the U.S. government’s broader inquiry into the Journal’s owner, News Corp., and the company’s 2011 phone-hacking scandal. A spokeswoman for the Journal said the paper had already conducted its own investigation and did not find any support for the claims made about its employees in China. She also suggested that an “unknown source” had sought to “taint” the Journal’s China coverage.
