New research using data from Quebec's health insurance program found a connection between Alzheimer's disease and elderly people who use benzodiazepines for three months or more. Medicines like Xanax, Ativan, Valium, and Klonopin are used to treat anxiety and trouble sleeping—and that's where things get confusing. Researchers said it isn't clear whether the link is casual or a direct connection. For instance, early Alzheimer's patients may be experiencing symptoms that are treated with benzos. Still, researchers urged physicians to use caution in prescribing the drug.
