Ditch the OJ and stock up on zinc: Zinc is effective at fighting a common cold, according to the Cochrane Collaboration, an Oxford-based non-profit that reviews existing medical literature to spot trends. Eleven of 18 studies showed zinc to be useful in fighting colds. One showed zinc lozenges reducing the duration of colds from seven days to four and cutting coughing from five days to two. One doctor whose studies were included in the study warns that many over-the-counter zinc remedies include other ingredients that interfere with the treatment.
