Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to announce a donation of $100 million to the Newark, New Jersey, public school system. Zuckerberg’s donation is expected to be matched by Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who has been raising the money from private foundations. The possible $200 million for Newark would amount to more than 20 percent of the city’s school budget. Newark’s schools, considered some of the worst in the country, are controlled by the state, and Gov. Chris Christie is expected to announce that he will not renew the superintendent’s contract and will instead implement major changes. Booker will draw up plans for Zuckerberg’s donation, and will also be Christie’s authorized representative in Newark in devising the changes to the school system.
