Italian carmaker Fiat Chrysler is going to pay Tesla hundreds of millions of euros so it can count the electric cars as part of its fleet, according to the Financial Times. The agreement is part of a strategy by Fiat Chrysler to avoid fines for violating the European Union’s new emission rules. “The step will let the Italian carmaker offset carbon dioxide emissions from its cars against Tesla’s, by bringing down its average figure to a permissible level,” the FT reports. Fiat Chrysler has not disclosed the full amount they will pay, only that the sum will help “optimize the options for compliance that the regulations offer.”
