During a break in the House Judiciary Committee’s hearing with Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker on Friday, Fox News host Chris Wallace said that so far, at least, “there doesn’t seem to be much there there” when it comes to a “smoking gun” on obstruction of justice by the Trump administration.
“On the other hand, I have to say, I do find it kind of rich that Republicans are so outraged that there would be this kind of a hearing of the other party’s president and administration,” Wallace added. “You know, it’s not like Republicans sat on their hands when Barack Obama was president. They investigated Benghazi, they investigated ‘Fast and Furious,’ they investigated the IRS.”
The Fox News Sunday host said he believes those were “all legitimate issues to investigate,” but added, “As Barack Obama famously said, ‘Elections have consequences.’ When Republicans have oversight of a branch of Congress or a house of Congress and they’re investigating a Democratic president, they’re going to make life difficult for them.”
“And now the Democrats are in control of the House and have control of these committees,” he continued. “That’s just the way it works.”
“You’re precisely right about that,” Fox’s Bill Hemmer responded.
Wallace went on to say that Whitaker “made a mistake” when he said in a press conference last month that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is “close to being completed.” Whitaker “would be wise, and I think he probably realizes this now,” he explained, “if he said nothing about the Mueller investigation in public.”
“But as I say, it is in the nature of the beast that when one party control the House, they’re going to try to make life difficult and make people sweat within the administration,” Wallace concluded. “Republicans did it to Democrats, Democrats are doing it to Republicans.”
