House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told a local radio station Wednesday the migrant caravan traveling to the southern border “could be” politically motivated, CNN reports. “I’m not sure, but it could be,” McCarthy reportedly told North Dakota’s WZFG radio when asked if the caravan was politically motivated and meant to impact the midterm elections. “’Cause one thing, you can’t put a caravan like this together without resources and others. And there’s questions about the timing, but why is it being encouraged and what is happening here? It also goes to core of what we need to have. We have to have a secure border. And our immigration laws need to be fixed.” McCarthy also reportedly said he was concerned about criminals being in the caravan’s ranks. “How many of them are gang members, because we find that so many time again, MS-13,” he said. President Trump has made similar unfounded claims in recent days, saying “Middle Easterners” and criminals are among the nearly 7,000 migrants walking toward the U.S.-Mexico border.
