Months ago, David Hasselhoff premiered a music video, “True Survivor,” featuring scenes from a near-indescribable movie called Kung Fury. That short has now been unleashed upon the world.
A crowdfunded send-up of cheap 80s action movies, Kung Fury is about a Miami supercop with a triceratops partner, who travel through time to kill the evil kung-fu master known as Adolf Hitler. Along the way, there are fights with sentient arcade games, machine gun-wielding barbarian princesses, and the laws of physics are at best irreparably bent.
Despite its batshit crazy storyline, Kung Fury has managed to gain some serious ground for its writer/director/star David Sandberg. Just last week, the short premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Thursday night it arrived on YouTube and also made its world television premiere, fittingly enough on El Rey, the network created by Grindhouse and Machete director Robert Rodriguez.
