Hours after news broke that late NFL great Ken Stabler had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)—caused by repeated blows to the head—the New York Times discovered that yet another deceased player suffered from the degenerative brain condition. The family of two-time Super Bowl quarterback Earl Morrall told the Times on Wednesday that, upon his death in 2014 at age 79, he had Stage-4 CTE. News of former players having the disease has plagued the NFL in recent months, especially after it was learned that 27-year-old safety Tyler Sash—who died of a painkiller overdose—had the condition after only one season at the professional level.
