The Nation magazine has a long and not very complimentary profile of me in the current issue. That's life in the big city. But I'll admit, I was taken by surprise in one way: it's very strange experience for a man deep into middle age to read a profile of himself that primarily focuses—not on his writings, not on his ideas—but on the alleged deficiencies of his own parents' child-rearing methods four decades ago.
