President Trump reportedly claimed the media was attempting to “score political points” by using the “sinister actions” of accused mail-bomber Cesar Sayoc “against” him. “The media’s constant unfair coverage, deep hostility and negative attacks only serve to drive people apart and to undermine healthy debate,” Trump reportedly said during a Friday evening rally in Charlotte, North Carolina. He said the media had “a major role to play” in the tone of political dialogue “whether [the media] want[ed] to or not.” The crowd then erupted into “boos” and “CNN Sucks” chants. “We have seen an effort by the media in recent hours to use the sinister actions of one individual to score political points against me,” the president then reportedly said. “The media has tried to attack the incredible Americans who support our movement to give power back to the people.” When asked earlier Friday if he would “tone down” his anti-media rhetoric in light of Sayoc allegedly sending explosive devices to Trump critics and CNN's New York offices, the president said he could “really tone it up.” Sayoc was arrested Friday on Florida for targeting over a dozen Democratic donors and government officials. According to his social media presence, Sayoc was a Trump supporter and threatened anti-Trump voices on social media.
