Here Come the Racists

During the campaign, Barack Obama’s enemies seemed reluctant to smear him with ugly rhetoric. But as The Daily Beast’s Matthew Yglesias points out, the last week has seen it come out in full force.
White America proved ready last fall to accept an African-American president. But in the eyes of some on the right, it was as if Barack Obama’s election meant that any talk of racial discrimination in America had to end. How else to explain the firestorm of controversy set off by the president of the United States offering the banal observation that there is "a long history" of "African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately," and that a police department that arrests a man inside his own home and winds up dropping the charges has acted “stupidly”? But as soon as the president spoke, the right wing pounced, smelling blood.
The Gates affair was the opening right-wingers used to pummel Obama with race-based attacks—to prove that America’s first post-racial presidency was anything but. On July 26, Fox's Brit Hume whined on air that "to be labeled a racist" in today's America is very bad, which has "placed into the hands of certain people a weapon" that can be wielded against poor, defenseless white America. One might think that the existence of social opprobrium against racists was a good thing and certainly an improvement from the recent past in which such opprobrium was directed at interracial couples and it was commonly impossible for Southern blacks to vote.
Since the campaign ended, we’ve been seeing the extreme racial paranoia that has characterized the American right for decades.
Either way, run-amok anti-racism doesn't seem to have stopped Hume's Fox News colleague Glenn Beck, who opined on July 28 that Obama had "exposed himself as a guy" with a "deep-seated hatred for white people or white culture."
Given that the roster of white people in Obama's life includes his mother, his vice president, his chief of staff, his chief political aide, the majority of his Cabinet, etc., the hatred strikes me as unlikely to be all that deep-seated. Rather, as with the absurd campaign by Newt Gingrich and others to brand Judge Sonia Sotomayor a "Latina woman racist," we're seeing the extreme racial paranoia that has characterized the American right for decades.
These sentiments long predate Obama's rise to the White House or any particular actions on his part. Popular conservative talk-radio host Michael Savage self-published a 1991 book called The Death of the White Male at a time when there wasn't so much as a black member of the United States Senate. But it's perhaps not surprising that America's first African-American president would prompt an outburst of racial anxiety and racist attacks. Indeed, many observers were expecting more of this sort of thing during the campaign. That it's only emerging in a big way now illustrates the paucity of appealing political leaders on the contemporary American right. During the presidential campaign, John McCain himself was, for obvious reasons, the most prominent face of American conservatism. And McCain was a practical politician looking to appeal to a majority. He was also a quite popular figure, whose approval rating remained over 50 percent even as he ultimately lost the election to an even-more-popular Obama. Under the circumstances, he had strong incentives to avoid the sort of hyper-ugly rhetoric that could easily prompt a backlash.
Today, though, Republican congressional leaders are gray nonentities like Rep. John Boehner and Sen. Mitch McConnell. That leaves the right wing's public presentation dominated by Fox News personalities, and the likes of Gingrich and Michelle Malkin, who recently dubbed Obama a "racial opportunist." Such figures aren't trying to build a viable electoral coalition; they're just competing for the intense devotion of a narrow segment of the conservative base. You can have a hit cable show with only a trivial fraction of the overall population watching, and you raise funds for your political organization by attracting a relatively small number of devoted followers. And a certain segment thrills to this sort of rhetoric.
Unfortunately, the willingness of prominent media figures to indulge in wild attacks on Obama seems to be spurring a rising tide of dubious ideas among the population at large. This can perhaps be most clearly seen in the popularity of "birther" conspiracy theories which hold that Obama was not, in fact, born in the United States of America. The idea is that a vast conspiracy has been perpetrated since Obama's infancy to get around the constitutional requirement that the president of the United States be a "natural born citizen" of the country. Nevermind how strange it would have been for Obama's parents to simply assume in the early 1960s (when interracial marriages were generally illegal and Jim Crow still reigned) that an obscure constitutional provision was the main impediment to Obama ascending to the White House. Also nevermind that most experts believe Obama would, in fact, qualify as a natural-born citizen even if he had been born in Indonesia or Kenya. Nor are hotbeds of conspiracy-mongering impressed by the fact that the Hawaii Department of Health has verified the authenticity of Obama's birth or that the Honolulu Advertiser ran a notice of Obama's birth. If this were left to the likes of World Net Daily, it might not matter very much. But the fringe has been fed by CNN's Lou Dobbs and National Review's Andy McCarthy, while Jonah Goldberg, another National Review pundit, sees no reason Beck should apologize for saying that the president is driven by hatred of white people.
The impact of this indulgence on public opinion is visible. A recent Research 2000 poll revealed that 23 percent of the public is uncertain as to whether or not Obama was born in the United States, with just 42 percent of Republicans willing to aver that he was born where he says he was. And lest anyone doubt the linkage between racial issues and "birther" conspiracies, note that belief in the theory is heavily concentrated among white people and Southerners. Indeed, the Washington Independent's Dave Weigel has calculated that "as many as three-quarters of Southern whites told pollsters that they didn't know where Obama was born."
This is an audience that's too large for the less scrupulous on the right wing to simply ignore. But McCain and his strategists were probably right in the first place to think that this material is too toxic to be worth touching. That probably explains why in recent weeks Republican Party identification has gone down, despite Obama's declining job-approval numbers. As long as economic woes continue, the opposition should have a good opening, but increasing levels of racially tinged hysteria doesn't seem to be the way to exploit it.
Matthew Yglesias is a fellow at the Center for American Progress Action Fund. He is the author of Heads in the Sand: How the Republicans Screw Up Foreign Policy and Foreign Policy Screws Up the Democrats.

The anonymity of the internet allows people with deep-seated racist feelings to express themselves without looking stupid to anybody. IMO, this is bringing racism out in the open, because media types feel they can exploit these feelings for their own benefit.
Even the health care issue and foreign policy is affected, because if Barack Obama is successful here, he looks good. The Republicans can't have that--no way--and they're willing to sacrifice the nation to get back in power.
They have no soul.
Fox cable and right wing radio have turned into nothing more than a big money making support group for white racists and haters...Since upping the ante is a successful entertainment strategy, it makes you wonder just where Fox and right wing talk will end up going to keep their audience happy.
The internet has turned into nothing more than a big money making support group for race baiting haters who spew "racist" at anybody they don't like. You and the author have waded into a 2 SIDED escalation of racial rhetoric. The hypocrisy of pointing the finger at Beck on a for profit site is one thing. Buying into it for free is mindless perpetuation of the problem. Try being part of the solution. Open a door for someone from another race.
Ah, yes. The "false equivalency" approach. Believed by nobody but the racists themselves.

"People listen to conservative talk radio to listen to common sense which is seriously missing on the major networks". But I think that they are listening to a bunch of right-wing nonsense!
trueconserve, you asked that we "please state when a reporter from Fox has made purposeful racist statements"? There's indisputable proof in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY04gIruZ4E.
And if you seriously think there is any "common sense" on conservative talk radio, you definitely need to see a mental health professional.
THESE are those who DECIDED to DIVIDE and CONQUER AMERICA by dividing the people into several minorities Black Hispanics Asians etc
LOOK , that has happened at least for 30 years..........
the NICHIFICATION of AMERICA so that that Limbaugh Hannity O'Reilly Drudge report etc....................can have their daily shows to CREATE MORE HATRED............
THE truth is that the WHITE people hearing that they are going to become minority in 20 something...............
SO the minorities should be understanding too..............

"I'm not sure what's racist about people (including prominent Obama supporter Andrew Sullivan, whom Yglesias also conveniently forgets) stating that the President should probably release an original copy of his birth certificate" - really? because it seems that the only reason anyone started asking is because he is black. Name a single time in history that a President has been pressured to prove his birthplace. Can't? Probably because they've all been white. God help the first Latino POTUS.
"Name a single time in history that a President has been pressured to prove his birthplace."
That's like saying "Name a single time in history that a President has been villified for not diverting 9/11." Each Presidency is unique unto its own issues.
Obama is the first President in memory who refuses to release his college records. He is the first President to refuse to release his birth certificate (John McCain did under pressure, why hasn't Obama?). He is the first President to refuse to submit his campaign to an audit.
These questions arose because he is secretive and refuses to be open, honest, and transparent. Who knows why he is refusing to release his original birth certificate? But playing the race card isn't going to make people stop asking.
Sure. Fox Viewers are racist. Hilarious.
Of course MSNBC doesn't have any racist viewers.
Are Right Wing racists more overt ?
Whereas Left Wing racists are more " subtle ? "

"People listen to conservative talk radio to listen to common sense which is seriously missing on the major networks"
Wow -- I've listened to conservative talk radio, and all I hear is screaming and shouting and calls for assassinations of just about every public figure they can get their hands on. If you think this kind of raw hate is common sense, then you have a serious problem with reality.
Yes, how low will they go?, I've wondered myself. I do believe Fox intentionally spews out hatred and lies. Not just against minorities, but also against anyone who thinks differently. The Fox watchers I know have become unhinged lately. There is no talking to them without confrontation, insult and lies. They believe what they are told, regardless of how wrong it is because they are going there to have their pre-conceived ideas confirmed, not to learn anything. I believe many of them are racists, but in addition to that they are fomenting hatred towards democrats and liberals as well. What these people don't understand is that we live in a democracy...Obama won, you guys lost! As Scalia once said...get over it! By the way, I heard that Sarah Palin didn't even graduate from high school. Think about it, they say she went to five different colleges in six years! That's unbelievable, isn't it? I think it's just a cover up for the fact she doesn't have a high school diploma. Has anyone here seen it? Why hasn't she posted her diploma on the internet????????? (Ha!)
flavor13, which conservative talk radio hosts are calling for assassinations? When making such wild accusations, at least be a little more specific.
roger37-Tehy are cut from the same cloth the "the blacks had it better under theri Massas than the African ones". Their ilk are racist down to their DNA mytochondria for women, and penile insecurity for the racist men.
Twirling in their collective minds, this is the ultimate food for a racially nervous breakdown. A Black man in the White House. God does not make mistakes. Now all can see the equality theory that America has bragged about for decades....NOT!!
The sad part is that libs see a "black man in the white house". Everyone else, including the middle and the right see just another person who is occupying the office. The left always makes a big deal while the right doesn't. The right continues to argue about his political philosophy.
@ truconserv
"The only reason why libs hate Fox is because they ask questions that other lib media doesn't bother to do. People listen to conservative talk radio to listen to common sense which is seriously missing on the major networks."
First off not all liberals hate Fox I personally find it a good way to know what kind of drivel is being fed to those too ignorant to know that when everything you hear coincides with your beliefs your being pandered to.
I enjoy broadcasts from different nations I think an outside view helps give perspective. As far Talk radio being common sense I say for the most part sense isn't common
tureconserv - You may be fooling yourself, but none of us. If telling yourself that the right is arguing his political policy helps you sleep better at night, have at it. But five minutes watching Fox News shows the exact opposite. Also, Conservatives, please stop acting like Fox is somehow not mainstream. The references to MSM being evil and liberal is BS. Rush, the drug abuser, Beck the mad uneducated racist, and Fox news as a whole are all part of the MSM system... get over it.
trueconserv
Refine.
That's the first word that comes to mind when I read your posts/"arguments."
Nothing muddies the credibility of an argument more than such pejoratives as "libs" or (are you sitting?) "Repugs."
Your comments always seem to center on a " Conservatives vs. "you-dumb-ass 'libs' " stance.
Such a position is boring, lacking in sophistication and (how elitist of me), just plain nonsensical--regardless of your politcal stance.
I think you are correct. The anonymity on the blogs and comment sections have become a meeting place of low life minds, that range from race hatred, antisemitism, and spread filthy rumors like wild fire. This has become a rising phenomena in the new internet universe we live in. In time it may be necessary for the more serious sites to review all comments before posting like the NY Times and others presently are doing. That keeps the talk on a higher level. While speech is free, a private website is not obligated to post and encourage hate speech.

I am most disturbed by the effect of Fox News on my parents' generation. (I am in my 50s) My church-going, soft-spoken mother and in-laws have become hostile and almost racist in their political beliefs. They are fans of Glen Beck and Bill O'Reilly. They don't see their behavior as unpatriotic with racist undertones. They voted for Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Bush, but never "hated" democrats as they do now. They believe that it was "started" by the Left. (Is it obvious that my father-in-law also listens to Rush?) These vile-for-bucks media sources have made this a bad political time that keeps good leaders from getting sucked into this mess. As a Republican, I want to see the President successful. Even Warren Buffet is baffled that people are not respecting and following our nation's leader during these trying times. Our country has been stagnant for too long. Healthcare reform is long overdue. Our regulatory systems are patched together. The hate mongers, indeed would rather sacrifice our country to win back power. Why are there no disclosures before these programs that announce "The program you are about to view contains subject matter that will be offensive to younger viewers. Parental discretion is advised"?
mclaubr1- FOX news has had on effect on OUR generation, as well. (I am also in my 50s). I, too, hear little Sunday school teaching 70 year old Grannies chatting in Walmart saying things like: "See what happens when the (n-words) takes over", "I'm not paying another penny in taxes because he's made us Socialists", "He's a Muslim and they want to kill all of us".
However, I also hear plenty of Rush listening, FOX news watching 50- somethings making the same kind of comments and worse. Just yesterday, a middle age white guy told me he would do "anything it takes" to get Obama out of office, and then chuckled "know what I mean??" He also told me he has been buying ammo since the day Obama was sworn in because he wants to be ready to fight "the war" against "blacks, Hispanics, and liberals".....We are living in very dangerous times when people are angry and can't communicate why---just parroting and repeating what they hear in these media sources who are stoking their anger for money. Most of these people are reaping the results of the decades of policies that Republicans gave us---deficit spending, tax cuts, borrowing and spending for unnecessary war, corporatizing and militarizing in the name of God. Yet, they will fight to the death anyone who tries to turn us around and keep us from falling into the abyss.
I'm in your parents' age group, and believe me, we're not going to be around for very much longer. We won't be able to indoctrinate our kids and our grandkids once we're dead and buried, and that's a good thing.
The question is: Can the next generations continue to keep right wing, intolerant political thought away from the kids until we're gone? Big question.
This comment has been removed by The Daily Beast's editors.
mclaubr1 - you can't be a republican and still support Obama's policies. The right has deep questions about Obama's political philosophy...nothing else. They are and should be very afraid of him and what he wants to do to this country. Never before have we had a leader who goes overseas and gives apologies. Never before have we had a leader who says one thing and does another like overtaking the banks and the auto industry. Shame on you for throwing your mother and in-laws under the bus. I don't support Obama based on race, I don't support Obama because of his socialist policies which HE GOT FROM HIS WHITE MOTHER AND GRANDPARENTS. Obama has continued to make race as a stigma even though he promised to be "everyone's" president. Had he been above the fray in the incident with Crowley, then he would have kept his mouth shut. Shame on you.
Trueconserv, you are not a true American in your hateful ranting. I AM AN AMERICAN, who believes in fixing what I broke, paying for my mess, finishing what I start, etc. It is the hate mongering sentiments like yours that hide behind your so-called principles. Your behavior is what has affected our elders. It has made them less of a great generation. It pains me to think that our history will remember them this way. My 27 year-old daughter explained how far apart their upbringing and educational level is from my generation. And even though the same "age" separates us, it is the 70s generation that stands a chance of not succuming to this hatred and being closer to our children's views. Unfortunately, as all haters, you need to resort to "shaming" me. PEACE.
SO WELL-SAID mclab 1 and sad
America , the beautiful has become America the HATEFUL !
SAD SAD
Trueconserv-
YOU POST TOO MUCH.
@mclaubr1 - I'm in your corner.
First off, HOW DARE trueconserv call you out!?! I've responded to this 'person' several times and it just backs away from providing any kind of proof to back up all their right-wing spew - way to go true...hahaha
My Mom and other relatives listen to Rush, Sean, O'Reilly and Beck and their histrionic and racist email messages and comments to me have increased 10-fold since Barack Hussein Obama was elected our President, the President of the United States.
It amazes and pains me that the party of my parents and family has turned into the party birthers, gun-nuts and tea-party participants. However, they're faithful listeners of the rabid right and will never be swayed - because of their racist tendencies and the fact that they will never understand that the 'country' - 'the voters' elected a black man.
The uptight right will never, ever give up on their claim to the right-white social agenda (get rid of abortion, no gays, no partnerships or whatever) until they can try to enforce this on those of us outside their base. The ultra-righties will fight, tooth and nail to ensure that their radical christian agenda is forced upon us...regardless of whether it's good for us or not.
It has to do with having the loyalty of religious conservatives. Religions often teach blind faith and not questioning God's word and thus religious authority. Unfortunately due to the GOP's courting of the religious right's support for so many years has caused that blind faith to bleed over to political leaders as well, in spite of all their anti religious actions. They campaign on religious values (values that are warped beyond recognition i.e, love turned to hate those you don't love, regardless of Jesus' teachings)
It's why separation of church and state is so important. Politicians can spin anything beyond recognition.
Getting your views formed by a drug addled loser, son of a lawyer he rants against and needed to save him from prison, is not a good place to form your thoughts and soul searching, im my humble opinion of course.
Had it been a poor minority jailed for the same offense as Lush Windball, he would have been advised by his overworked court appointed lawyer to plead quilty, Makes the judges happy when their docket is shortened for an earlier Tee time,
This is not hard to figure out; they're red-necked krackers. I am a white woman who remembers the wade-ins of the 60s at Chicago's beaches. What? Would black skin pollute the water; how ridiculous. Yet, heads were bashed and people thought they were superior/inferior depending on perspective. We should all ignore those haters, be they black or white or brown or yellow or red and remember we're all one race -- the human race!
The '60s at Chicago beaches all over again at a swim club in Pennsylvania with white adults screaming a little kids about poluting the water in 2009. Heads weren't bashed because the group sponsoring the children left and didn't return but the behavior of the adults was revolting and hadn't evolved since the '60s I am white, female and live in Mississippi. Since my Louisiana Certificate of Live Birth is just like Obama's, I assume I must not be a Real American and right how I am ashamed of this nation. I am old enough to have lived through desegregation and believed that we had grown past this vile pestilence that cripples the soul. I accepted that just living in Mississippi regardless of race, gender and a post-graduate education, I would face an up hill struggle with Real American's whose prejudice assumed that I was barefoot and illeterate, but I thought that the worst of the bias and hatred surrounding race was confined to a few, old, fat white men who would eventually die off. I was mistaken.
Racism, sexism and even slavary are all motivated by a quest for control and power over others one perceives to be inferior and undeserving. It is as damaging to the the soul of the bigot as it is to those they persecute.
These older people (I am 76 myself) are still living in the 40,s when it was still okay to look down on the 'negroes'. They just haven't moved with the times. They feel 'safer' believing what they believed in the past. Otherwise, they'd have to rethink their beliefs.
I wish we could ignore them, but it's getting so overt and aggressive that's impossible. I believe we should confront them. When we hear it in our lives, we should say something like "I know you don't mean to sound like a racist, but when you say things like that, you do!" Otherwise, 50 years of progress is being flushed down the toilet by Rush, Beck and Dobbs. They disgust me.
Why is it that if we do not agree with the President we are called a racist. I don't agree with President Obama's policies. Liberals are all for free speech as long as you agree with them. As soon as you have a different idea or policy you are ignorant, racist or should be hung out to dry. Enough! everyone has there own opinion and should be able to spout it from whatever pulpit they choose. It's your right to disagree, so stop calling people names because your thinking is not the same.
Saying "extreme racial paranoia that has characterized the American right for decades." is nonsense. Black people are paranoid about racism. Every negative event becomes racism. Some people don't like morons black or white. Also McCain as the most prominent face of conservatism? Huh? McCain is a liberal. That is why he lost. Why does racism dominate discrimination marketplace? What about persons with disabilities? Black people abuse them on TV alongside of white people. They are no different when it comes to exploitation and greed. Victims of racism are not more moral than others.
i agree that it is totally unacceptable to try to tear down the president for the sake of tearing down. there were plenty of people who are in power now who could not stand the notion that the tide turned in Iraq, and who wished the military failure in the surge. i did not vote for Obama, though, like others who voted for McCain, was pleased he won. I am not a Republican, but I am a conservative, and I assure you that the hundreds of liberal I work with regularly will tell you, respectfully, I have a soul. As far as racism - posh - the argument that Iglesias advances would be far more compelling if he addressed the basic facts of the case. The president stumbled badly on this, talking without the fact, and Gates was a sanctimonious blowhard. The existence of racism elsewhere does not excuse either of them in this non-racist situation. As far as the media, it is a two way street. Put Olbermann and Limbaugh in the same elevator and let it get stuck between floors for a long time. The country would be better off.
What a clusterfuck America has become.......I'm beginning to believe the entire country is suffering from an obtuse socio-depressive condition, and all of this is results of our madness.
Psycho babble meth warp speed.
POTUS is spending this country into bad health. His foreign policy seems to be apologize and prostrate. The dems are in power and are willing to do anything - I mean anything - to stay in power, including sacrificing this nation.
Wake up and smell the coffee !!!!! If it weren't for FOX news allwe would ever hear is what the government and the bleeding heart liberals want us to hear. At least, along with common sense we get to hear the sad truth about what is going on in this country. And racists, PLEASE gimme a break, the only racists are the ones that continually use the "race card" to get what they want. I don't care what color Obama is, what I do care is that he is pushing this country toward socialism and I do not want that nor should anyone else. If you want to live in a country where small businness ceases to exist and the government "takes care" of everything then get the heck out of America and go live in a socialists society and see how much you reall like it and take Michael Moore and Jane Fonda with you !!!!!!! Proud to be an American! My grandparents were not from this counrty but they called themselves American, plain and simple. If you are not for this country then go back to where you came from. If you don;t like it here, go find a better place to live and take the socialism with you. Capitalism must remain if America is to remain. Otherwiase it will no longer be America.!!!!!!!!!!!!! If people would stop using the word racism, then and only then does it even have a chance to disolve. Think about it - who uses that word all the time? Only the people that want it to aid in their cause!!!! Why don't we evr hear of, "German-Amrericans, Italian-Americans, Dutch-Americans, and on and on and on!!!!! Because they came her learned the language and beacme AMERICANS! The children and their children and their children are nothing more than Americans. Enough is enough is enough. Right is right and wron is wrong and that is why God gave most of us a concious, so we can figure it out. Live and let live and stop asking for hand outs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our founding fathers worked for it and so should everybody else !!!!!!!
just like you couldn't have george bush look good in any way and were willing to exploit the deaths of 5,000 american soldiers to regain political power and the white house.but of course you think that was a good thing because now the right people are in charge the people you agree with.no, can't have any dissenting opinions not in america.you hypocrite
Wonder how Lou Dobb's Mexican-American wife, and
his Latino Children feel about their husband and father being a " racist ? "
I was blown away when I heard an interview with an author who claimed that the Secret Service no longer conducts magnetometer scans at every Obama event.
I forgot to write the guy's name down and could not find his new book on amazon.com, but he seemed totally informed when he stated that such scans have become "optional" - (My exaggeration, but what the hell were they thinking?) - at some presidential events, ever since Homeland Security took over the Secret Service and reduced their budget.
When my partner (who travels in a wheelchair), and I attended an Al Gore event during the 2000 campaign, I wondered if it would have been possible to smuggle a gun in the seat of my partner's metal wheelchair (despite being "wanded" by the Secret Service since they never checked under her butt), but this news is totally insane.
The irony about my remembrance of the Gore event is that because my partner was disabled, we were escorted to the front of the rope line so she didn't have to struggle to see over the crowd and we both shook his hand before he got on the stage! Fortunately, I'm a peace-loving Dem who only imagines the worst happening....
I also happened to see a slow-motion replay of the Reagan assassination attempt just after hearing this report about cut-backs in the Secret Service and it scared the crap out of me, especially with all the racist hate talk from "birthers" and the right-wing media provocateurs.
To paraphrase SOS Clinton regarding John Bolton's comments on the NK rescue mission: "if Obama walked on water, he would say Obama could not swim". This is all hate and racism run amok. The Internet does make it easier. The funny part of this mess is that the right-wing is very busy talking about "people in mama's basement" when in fact, they are the ones in mama's basement and are very proud of it.
The racists have been around since about 1619. They never went away, but just found new ways to say the same things they always have.
That a black man was elected president of the United States is nothing short of a biblical miracle, though, for anyone who has studied the history of this country longer than two minutes.
here's my two cents: is that Obama represented the party who for that matter supported racism and still does. Many members of his party were members of the KKK. Thanks to the republican party, he was allowed to be nominated for president and the civil rights act. If you have studied your history, as you say you have, you know that is true. If a "right" person questions ANYTHING that Obama does, it's quickly labeled racist without merit. The right has a big problem with Obama's policies, not his race. He represents socialism which scares the heck out of most people. The only people who have incorporated race in this is Obama himself.
I know, you're the escaped gorilla that a SC representative thought was a relative of Michelle Obama. The KKK Dems long ago joined up to Nixon's "southern strategy." I bet your GnOP southern friends don't trust you enough, or your feet and legs beneath the robes don't fit in.
Sorry, too much of the GnOP is tainted by racism for them to have any credibility.
trueconserv: Did you fall on your head? You think the Republicans enacted the Civil Rights Act? When was that? Right after Johnson passed it? Go back to C Street or meet the birthers at the bar and make up some new story; yours is old, old, old.
The right has a big problem with Obama's policies AND his race! I have been voting for president since I first cast my ballot for Jimmy Carter, and I have never EVER seen anywhere near as much vitriol and hatred that has been levied against any president as I have seen against Obama. It's only because he was elected the first black POTUS, and the right-wing nuts have inevitably come out of the woodwork as a result. But they can't come right out and call him the "n" word cos that would make them look bad. So they call him a "socialist", a "muslim", a "communist" or a "Marxist" instead. This is just thinly veiled racism, and no one is getting fooled by it. So boo freaking hoo if you are being labled a racist.
tcs, let's define racism, because it's obvious you are oblivious. When a person of the opposite ethenticity use their influence or authority to treat a person differently soley because of race, it is termed racist. If this definition were not true, George Bush would have reaped havoc from Newt,Limbaugh and the croonies @Fox News. However regardless of how many mistakes he made, Republicans ignored most of them and camouflaged the rest. If Obama was a white man, the rules would change. You know it, so quit trying to explain away racist attitudes. You know they exist, you just don't understand how they affect the recepients. Get a makeup artist to give you a good tan, then go job-hunting, or shopping, maybe you will get the picture when the feeling of rejection hits you square in the face.
trueconserv - keep your two cents. You're going to need it if you and your kind get their way again. As for all the yelling about the right focusing on his politics and not his skin color.. I think thou dost protest too much.
trueconserv, you are the saddest "piece of work" I think I have seen on this or any other blog. You are exactly the type that has caused the split in the Republican Party. I just hope people like you keep pushing that split until you make yourselves the obscure, shrill minority you deserve to be. People like you deserve not to be called human beings.
Lyndon Baines Johnson wasn't a republican and is credited for the civil rights act. JFK was president during desegregatation and I have yet to meet a republican Kennedy.
Quit trying to rewrite history. Your lack of education is showing.
@trueconserv----give it up. Your opinions don't seem to be appreciated. Maybe you need to think before you write.
trueconserv has yet to answer any of the questions posed to her previously...she's an agitator and nothing more, along the likes of Banjo1 and the previous administration sycophants and race agitators for the current administration.
Prove me wrong true...c'mon...
Truconserve, we know that the southern democrats were racist and kept segregation going for 100 years, but when the civil rights act was passed during LBJ's term these racist democrats became republicans and have remained so to this day. Why don't you check your history books? Hmm?
tru you may, or may not, believe the BS you pump out. And while it may be true that the Democratic party of some 60 years ago was at the heart of Jim Crow and other obscenities. It's also true that they morphed into Dixiecrats- another critter almost entirely- and then those Dixiecrats morphed into modern southern republicans who became the heart of Nixon's "southern strategy" which continues to this day. Your "Socialism" only scares the heck out of the most weak-minded and easily frightened. You wingnuts sure have a problem with President Obama's policies because you know how out of touch with the country you wingers have become and see in President Obama's policies the high possibility of success which would prolong the wingnuts exile in the political wilderness.Meantime you content yourself with your delusions and self-denial, it erodes your effectiveness.
Social responsibility is not socialism. Everyone pays taxes, everyone needs representation. Regulation is not socialism. Deregulation is what got us into this mess. If we don't come out of this economic mess, the fault will lie at the feet of those who seek to keep anything from happening by undermining our leaders at every turn, while doing absolutely NOTHING constructive. Vitriol will only poison us. At least Obama's goal for health care for everyone actually helps the tax payer. I would be more concerned with the money going to save big banks and corporations who then turn around and pay out millions in bonuses. That clearly is not in the best interest of those who supplied the money. In my opinion that was a blunder by all who voted it through as written. But one blunder does not mean everything a president does will be a failure, and it is unlikely that everything he/she does means the sky is falling.
I swear if Obama said the sky was blue, there would be reports from Fox noise that he is conspiring to do away with all other colors and therefore require all of us to euthanize our household pets if they aren't blue. Speculation is not news, it's speculation, and you have to take it with a large grain of salt when it comes from someone that will do anything to undermine Obama regardless of it's effect to our country.
Deregulation proved that left to it's own devices, corporate America will not do the right socially, economically, morally, or environmentally responsible thing......yet they are running our country through both parties. The cure is to research other parties and really know which really represents you. Less public support of the two bought parties will force them to do the right thing.
to elldeen ... not all "right" have a problem with his race ... and saying so makes you yourself prejudice, you are classifying a whole group as being white racists when there are whites blacks and all others a part of the republican party, and plenty of white republicans who can careless if he was purple ... i do acknowledge that there are plenty of racists people out there whose only reason for hating Mr. Obama is the color of his skin ... i for one am not one of them, i have been raised to look at people for who they are and judge them only by their actions ... but race is going to keep going on this country if we don't stop this nonsense ... its seen on both sides ... you say that you have never seen more hatred for any other president ... and i disagree with you on that ... i don't know many people who have alot of good things to say about Mr. Bush on both sides ... if someone doesn't like Mr. Obama's policies they should be able to voice it and not be accused of being a racist (am im not talking about the ones who use poor choice of words to get there point across, spit on them for all i care) ... so much time is wasted on race ... we are all american ...
"biblical miracle"? Try apocalypse.
The original meaning of the word "apocalypse" was: a lifting of the veil. It was a term used when describing the defeat of evil and the coming of goodness. So, given that meaning, you are absolutely right!
I think it's biblical for some of them that because, Barak Obama, represents the false messiah to them - read their remarks: the one, the annointed, the chosen the messiah - they're really looking for their biblical end time release.
I say let 'em all go to their rapture and let's get on with the business of running the US.
But wait....
The forefathers created policies of color to ensure the continuance of stolen wealth be inherited by their offsprings. This is just the completion of a corrupt way of life for a Nation built on sin.
Yes, you can look into these pundits face and tell that they are overwhelmed with hate for this Black President who is the American President of the free world.
oh Christ, here come the opportunists.
lets set something straight. dumb liberals and dumb conservatives both cling to sexy conspiracy theories to spice up their lives. the 9/11 truther movement (wow, seems SO 2004 right now) fostered the notion that white protestants (skull and bones) or JEWS planned the terrorist attacks and not islamic extremists. these conspiracies were racially charged and implicated officials but causing the deaths of 3000 people for political gain. 'not born in my country' seems, to me, far less of a charge. for yglesias, however, conservative idiots are not just idiots, they are RACIST idiots. and their representatives, therefore, don't just pander to stupid Americans, but pander to RACISM.
don't get me wrong - this is a completely fair charge. however, if yglesias was truly even handed, he would address the rampant homophobia or anti-antisemitism in some elements of the black democratic base. he would argue that obama pandered to this homophobic elements by opposing gay marriage. unfortunately, he is not addressing the issue objectively. instead, he is using the big dumb 'racist' hammer, spewing ad hominem attacks left and right instead of quickly and easily dismantling the birther arguments with simple facts. no need for a 'national discussion'. there is no real 'teaching moment'. the more race obsessed your nation becomes, the more yglesias and other opportunists benefit.
I guess you must have missed the ENDLESS articles written by liberals about homophobia in the RELIGIOUS Black community that occurred right after the election. The correlation is actually with religion instead of skin color. Non-evangelical Blacks have the same level of acceptance of Gays as the average White American. EVERY politician running in the '08 election opposed gay marriage, and they were all White candidates.
Did you also miss the fact that president Obama makes it a point to bring up Civil Rights for Gay Americans at EVERY speech he gives to Black community organizations including his recent speech at the 100 Year anniversary of the NAACP.
Finally, NO Democrat in congress supported the 9/11 truther movement or started legislation to promote that conspiracy like the Republican members of congress are doing with the 'birthers'. An 9/11 truthers were always pushed OFF every liberal radio talk show and liberal t.v. program. Bill Maher torn them a new one MANY times on his show.
The 'birther' movement's sole premise that Obama is not "American" is due to his "otherness": his skin color, name, childhood is different than our other 43 presidents thus he MUST not be American. Their premise is tied hand in hand with his race and identity. They have ZERO evidence that he is anything else than himself. At least the 9/11 truthers have data that they can FALSELY misinterpret to reach their crazy conclusions.
"I guess you must have missed the ENDLESS articles written by liberals about homophobia in the RELIGIOUS Black community that occurred right after the election." <-- i'm sure these exist, but to argue that this perspective has been elevated in the minds of the general public to the same degree is preposterous. these articles don't gain traction because it doesn't fit the simplistic narrative that the black community is the victim of prejudice but never the perpetrator of prejudice.
you have cherry picked facts with regards to black homophobia. the studies i've read show that controlling for education and religiosity doesn't even the numbers out in favor of the black community. there is still a large discrepancy.
as for gay marriage in the 2008 election, only the winning candidates opposed same sex marriage. some candidates in the primaries favored it. these candidates, of course, were labeled as '2nd/3rd tier' candidates (whatever that means). Kucinich and Gravel are, of course, both white.
i honestly don't care how many times obama brings up gay rights in his speeches. he has spent absolutely no political capital in favor of gay rights. as commander in chief, he could stop the implimentation of don't ask don't tell but won't. he could support gay marriage but won't go so far.
one last thing: maybe some of these republicans are using the issue to their benefit while their party sinks into oblivion. msnbc, however, are gleefully keeping this movement alive by giving their members a public forum with which to dig the republicans a bigger hole. i am not contesting these facts. remember that my original point is that liberal truthers and conservative birthers are cut from the same cloth. you can't honestly think that truthers are only fueled by 'misinterpreted data.' some are clearly motivated by antisemitism, claiming that no jews went to work on 9/11 and the whole thing was a zionist plot. you'll find this narrative, as well as a few copies of the chronicles of zion, in black neighbourhoods around NYC. they aren't hard to find. as for your characterization of the birther movement, you are making the argument rather academic. (otherness... really brings me back, polisci year 2, anderson...) COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. keep bombarding conspiracy theorists with facts. guessing their motivations and claiming that they are all simply racist is still ad hominem. ad hominem attacks will FUEL them. cold hard evidence is the best way to go about undermining their cause. it also happens to be the most civilized.
Wayfarin: "I guess you must have missed the ENDLESS articles written by liberals about homophobia in the RELIGIOUS Black community that occurred right after the election." <-- i'm sure these exist, but to argue that this perspective has been elevated in the minds of the general public to the same degree is preposterous.

Really? This was covered numerous times by ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, FOX, NPR etc. For about a 2 month period NPR would have Talk of the nation bring it up almost WEEKLY. There were also street protests that were heavily covered by ALL the news stations. Maybe you were in a coma or in a cave somewhere.
ALL studies that separate out religion from race show that Blacks respond to the question of Gay marriage similar to their White counterparts. Blacks who are religious have the same prejudices as their White counterparts.
To ask President Obama to write an executive order to stop "don't ask, don't tell" is to say that all the liberals who were opposed to Bush's use of executive orders in "stop lost" were simply opposed to Bush instead of being opposed to the use of expansion of executive power by presidents. We do not live in a monarchy, the executive branch of our democracy should not be allowed to over-rule congress. Not even for causes that WE care about. Otherwise, we are hypocrites going by the rule "do as we say, not as we do"! Congress passed "don't ask, don't tell" and it's up to congress to repeal it.
P.S. it is ironic that "don't ask, don't tell" came about by Gay groups pushing a Democratic administration to create a law allowing Gays to serve. I guess, no one learns from history as a new wave of Gay groups is now pushing another Democratic administration to create a law allowing Gays to serve. Can't wait to see the disaster that results. DITTO with pushing the White house on healthcare.
Our founding fathers had flaws, but there was a reason they set up 3 EQUAL but separate branches of power.
Bringing up gay equality and throwing cocktail parties can't compete with:
Citing ``pressure'' from the Obama administration and other members of Congress, U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings has withdrawn an amendment that aimed to weaken the ``Don't Ask, Don't Tell'' policy that bans gays and lesbians from openly serving in the military.
Hastings, D-Miramar, wanted to add language to a defense appropriations bill to prohibit spending money to investigate or discharge members of the military who reveal they are homosexual or bisexual.
But ``due to pressure from some of my congressional colleagues and from the White House, I have withdrawn my amendment,'' a Hastings said in a statement released Tuesday.
Weston, 44, is one of an overwhelming number - 70 percent - of black voters in California who voted for Proposition 8 and helped secure its passage, according to exit polling conducted by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
African Americans, energized by Barack Obama's presidential bid, boosted their numbers at the polls this year to 10 percent of the state's electorate, up from 6 percent in 2004.
"The Obama people were thrilled to turn out high percentages of African Americans, but (Proposition 8) literally wouldn't have passed without those voters," said Gary Dietrich, president of Citizen Voice, a nonpartisan voter awareness organization.
Latinos were 18 percent of California's voters, and through sheer numbers also contributed to Proposition 8's success. But 53 percent of Latino voters supported the measure, a much lower percentage than black voters. Among white and Asian voters, 49 percent voted for the measure.

"ALL studies that separate out religion from race show that Blacks respond to the question of Gay marriage similar to their White counterparts. Blacks who are religious have the same prejudices as their White counterparts." First you were cherrypicking, but now, by claiming that there is widespread consensus on this, you are just lying. Nevermind the fact that the church plays a central role in a much higher proportion of the black community than the white community. So, even if you are right, the black community has a serious problem on its hands. To think that the rampant machismo is not a contributing factor is just silly.
I am fully aware that America is not a monarchy. For military matters, teh founding fathers granted certain powers to commander in chief. he is fully within his jurisdiction, not to arbitrarily strike down the law by executive order, but to cease its implimentation. it would NOT be a disaster. frankly, i think you could use those arab linguists. the private sector has learned how to work with homosexuals. i think a disciplined military should be able to as well.
His skin color is virtually the only "thing".
Is it me, or have you all strayed from the original conversation? By the end of this stream of posts, this somehow became about how blacks hate gays? WTF?
Let's deal with one problem at a time.
Just look at your dollar bill, why is NEW WORLD ORDER printed on there? The forefathers set the framework for our Nation to unite with others and be one world. Look to organized religion to find out why these things are taking place, this is not an accident folks.
If right wingers are going to continue to conflate the 9/11 truthers with the liberal party at large, and deem it the liberal analog to the birthers, you're going to have to start giving specific examples of Democratic congressmen and public figures stating that they support the truther movement, believe it, or don't dismiss it.
I have NEVER heard a Democratic politician or prominent progressive media voice say anything other than that the truthers are completely bat-shit insane.
Can you say the same thing for the Republican party and Birthers?
i haven't conflated that movement with democrats. but a large portion of the movement is LIBERAL. i have said this twice now. i'm not defending republicans.
It was the Muslims who originally said that the Jews caused 9/11. They couldn't admit that it was 15 Egyptians, and 3 Saudis who flew those planes into the World Trade Center buildings. And don't thay ALWAYS pick on the Jews? I never heard of American 'truthers', only Muslim countries who espoused this theory.
Obama doens't believe in gay marriage, but he does believe in CIVIL UNIONS, like a lot of people do. But, that aside, he has a right to have his views, even if they seem wrong to some of us. After all, he isn't PERFECT. He is a man and a good one at that. Give it up. As for the Gates affair, the officer, who is probably a good officer, did overreact when he cuffed Gates and took him down to the station. Can you imagine if that had happened to a white conservative, what they would have said????
McCain let Sarah Palin administer the most of nasty, racially-inspired criticism of Obama. My guess her political return will try to capture the (thankfully) shrinking demographic of the uneducated, alienated southern white male.
That the majority of the birthers are uneducated white southerners is no surprise to me. I grew up with these kind of people and know that their Scots-Irish heritage and culture loves to promote the image of the disaffected, downtrodden outsider who is nonetheless, proud, patriotic and "good."
Southern males are the most angry and pitiful of this "birther ignoramus" group. Because they're generally angry at a world they fail to comprehend, they are vulnerable to right wing propaganda.
Right-wing media hate-mongers tap into uneducated southerners' anger the same way George Wallace did, by appealing to their ignorance and fear.
I am always amazed at how these people vote against their own interests based on misconstrued notions of "self-sufficiency" and "patriotism." Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face....
So, you're not a bigot? How about a review of some of your quotes:
"the majority of the birthers are uneducated white southerners"
"their Scots-Irish heritage and culture loves to promote the image of the disaffected, downtrodden outsider"
"Southern males are the most angry and pitiful of this "birther ignoramus" group."
"Because they're generally angry at a world they fail to comprehend"
How about some word-substitution to expose you more thoroughly:
"the majority of the black people are uneducated southerners"
"their African heritage and culture loves to promote the image of the disaffected, downtrodden outsider"
"Blacks are the most angry and pitiful of this "birther ignoramus" group."
"Black people are generally angry at a world they fail to comprehend"
You are an awful, hateful person.
Meaningless drivel, MT. Your experiment proved only that you're good at word games and you completely missed the point.
But wait....
What part is not the truth? The fact that since the existence of America the white male has shown terroristic behavior is not being racist. Can you say "truth". America hides behind the Christian Religion whilst their own forefathers committed some of the worst sins known to man. How exactly do you explain that? The reverse language you have used is one that the entire Black Community has dealt with since 1876. Look to your closest Declaration of Independence for understanding!!
Hey Finch-
I thought you
Had sworn off this miserable
God-forsaken site.
You're back for more abuse?
Good man.
Ohnotagain - "America hides behind the Christian religion whilst their own forefathers committed some of the worst sins known to man." Can you say "LIE"? You'd better thank them everyday because if it hadn't been for them and their political foresight, you wouldn't be here! FYI - slavery didn't startt in the colonial days and Africans took part in slavery too. They seem to not be looked at all. They were volunteer participants and made loads of money in the process. You are very narrowminded and uneducated. Obama does seem to be a racist as his mentor was and his minister continues to stir the pot.
mtfinch. no he's not hateful at all. He is plainly telling you why the educated moderates no longer can vote Republican. We will not support a party that panders to the type of personality he described perfectly. Someone has to say it. Somone else needs to pay attention.
Sorry, MT, but if I'm a bigot, I guess I'm a self-hating bigot. I am of I Scots-Irish/English/French/Dutch/Irish heritage, a true American mongrel dawg. I grew up in the south in the foothills of Appalachia and have lived and traveled throughout the southern US during various stages of my adult life. I am lily white and despite having lived in the west for twenty years, I still have an identifiable southern accent. I still consider myself a 'southerner," in the best sense of that word.
When I return back south and spend time with my family or travel to various parts of the south to visit friends, people inevitably assume I'm a "safe" person with whom they can share their racist and amazingly ignorant and fearful paranoid fantasies regarding race, politics, and/or religion. It is not only African Americans they're fearful of (although the election of Barack Obama has inevitably fueled their racist obsessions regarding blacks). I've heard rants of insanity on Latinos and Asians and on people whose religion is not Christianity.
Your "word substitution" game is meaningless to me. I am telling you what I know from personal.painful experience. Perhaps if I hung out with other ethnic groups in the south and got to know them well, I would hear other views. What I have heard from the Asian, African-American and Mexican-American people who have married into our family is heart-breaking. In the southern U.S.they have been threatened, harassed by law enforcement and snubbed because of their color or ethnicity. My biracial nieces and nephews have been treated with hostility and they are children! This all occurs in an area that is historically and racially rather monolithic (Scots-Irish/caucasian). but these people are not all inhabitants of rural areas. Some of the worst incidents have occurred in areas that are racially diverse (at least for the south) urban areas.
As a resident of CA I don't have blinders on that all is perfect here, but racial, ethnic and religious diversity, a historic tradition of tolerence and educational opportunity have made the people of this state relatively immune to much of the blatant prejudice and hatred that is still very much a part of the south.
For the record, I don't hate anyone. I just feel anger (and I think righteous anger) at those who knowingly continue to harbor hatred toward others based on their color, ethnicity and/or religion. My experience is that the social evolution of the southerner-particularly the white male southerner- is stuck in reverse.
Why do you call this bigotry? It is true. Open your eyes.
Trueconserv:
I didn't want to engage you. I've just been reading your posts, but ... USE YOUR BRAIN!
Your argument is qualitatively off-base. Understand, the African practice of slavery was COMPLETELY different than the American practice. African slaves were taken after a battle and integrated into the society at the bottom. They did menial labor, but were CARED for. They were essentially wards fo the state. Over time, they were able to rise up in the ranks, some even became tribal chieftans. Shaka Zulu, the most famous African general and tribal leader Africa ever had, was a slave. They were educated by their "masters" and beatings/abuse was rare. This was the way a tribe would expand and defeat enemies, through INTEGRATION. Now, does that sound like American slavery?
I'll wait
....
NO. It doesn't.
Do NOT try to blame American slavery on Africans. Slavery in this country was a clusterfuck. and here's the thing: You can stop feeling guilty about it because no one blames you!
Obama seems to be racist? Glen Beck called...he wants his flawed logic back. Does he just hate his white half? Does he wake up every morning, draw a line down the middle of his face and slap one side of it for everything it's done to the other side? This man is anything but racist. Have you read his book? No? If you had, you would understand the role race played in his life. You would see how he was forced to identify with one side or the other in college. And how he eventually found that that was a fallacy and embraced his complete heritage; the white and the black; the African and the American.
As for the founding fathers: They did a good job setting up the skeleton of our government. As people, they did a lot of shit that we wouldn't brook today. Thomas Jefferson, even though he believed a black person was worth 3/4 of a white person, sure did love them dark skinned slave girls! How many did he rape and get pregnant? And we thought the world was ending because Clinton got a blow job in the oval office?! So, yeah, for all their accomplishments, the founding fathers had their demons. They were just men like anyone else. Take them down from the pedestal.
And use your head for something more than laying your hats on. You're better than your rhetoric. No one could be worse.
racism, sexism, regionalism and classism all bundled into a critique on how the OTHER party is full of prejudice. what a joke.
Racism? No. I share the racial characteristics of the people I'm critiquing.
Sexism? No. I didn't include all males or all southern males, just southern males who use their politics to justify their racial and religious prejudices. I have to admit, though, I'm not real keen on southern men in general.
Regionalism? Perhaps, but if so, it's based on a lot of experience in comparing regions.
Classism? You have no idea what socio-economic class I am or what the class is of the people I'm criticising is, do you? So how do you label my commentary "classism" without that knowledge?
cndfox, While I agree with your reasoning, I am not nor ever have been (or voted) Republican, and I'm a "she," not a "he."
At first, I was a little take aback by this comment, but then I realized that as an educated, middle-aged, (mostly-)white Southern male, I'm in a very small minority; I voted for Obama and support most of his initiatives. The Birthers base is in the Deep South and the Midwest, and it's willful ignorance at best. At worst, it's thinly-veiled racism. I've lived in the South all my life, and one should never underestimate the self-delusion which allows otherwise reasonable people to believe and say what they have to in order to justify their hatred; a hatred which they might not even realize themselves to be guilty of. Tea parties, Birther diatribes and the rest of their fitful expressions of unhappiness are just whitewash (pun intended) over their ingrained bigotry.
There's very little to be found wrong with baptox's generalizations, except that there is significant support for the Birther movement outside of the Deep South and the predominant ancestral makeup of Southern whites may not necessarily be Scots-Irish.
If you're a true Southerner you should be ashamed of yourself. You can live your whole life in the South and never encounter racism. You can encounter overt racism at the drop of a hat in certain locals in NYC. This bigotry against the south is not only supported by the leftwing it's being promoted. Someone who really cares about their homeland wouldn't tolerate this.
@ThinkAgain:
"You can live your whole life in the South and never encounter racism." What incredible bullshit. No, in the South nobody talks about it in public, unless it's a close friend that you know holds the same opinion. But believe me, it's there.
I spent 35 yars in the North and 36 in the South, and there is indeed a difference. Yes, there's racism in the North also, but people are willing to discuss it and argue about it. In the South, it's just always there, and now the internet is the device to let it out.
Try reading the AOL comments on news articles sometime to get a clearer look. It'll blow you away. (AOL stands for "Appalachia On Line.")
bigbluefrog - boy did you make your myopic views most evident. I've lived in the south as well as the north. And without a doubt, most of the racism exists up north. Second, when you say, "in order to justify their hatred...to be guilty of : Tea parties". What the HECK does a tea party have to do with hatred???????? Last time I checked, repubs, moderates and democrats came out to the Tea parties INCLUDING blacks!!! DUH!
The birthers have good, solid questions that were never answered by the cheering press. They poo-pooed the idea and never really did what a true journalist was supposed to do. These questions would never be here had they done their job in the first place. Take a chll pill.
trueconserv: And how many blacks have been hung by lynch mobs in the north?
actually, big blue, a recent poll showed support for birthers outside the south is about 15%....
Scots-Irish? What part of the south's ancestral makeup is Scots-Irish? Surely, not Texas, Louisiana or Florida. Didn't do too well in elemetary school history of the U S, I presume.
CNN displayed a map of the U S, identifying locations of known white supremacists groups and they were fairly well dispersed across the nation. The largest and most active branch of the KKK is in Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania is welcome to them. Do not send them back to the South, we don't want them.
While I agree that both the south and midwest seem to be hotbeds of the birther movement, I only have personal experience in the southern US. I've never lived in or traveled much in the midwest, so I don't really have much insight into the social dynamics of your average midwesterner.
The Scots-Irish heritage in the south is well-documented, particularly in Appalachia. Many southerners (and most Americans) who consider themselves of "English" or "Irish" heritage are actually of Scots-Irish ancestry.
Trueconserv:
Are you black? Hispanic?
If you aren't, do NOT try to tell me (I am black) that most of the racism is in the North. I grew up in the South. I married my white wife in the south. And we have traveled to every region of this nation.
But it's always good to go back to the south, where my wife is called a race traitor and a little old lady spit on her for being with me. It's also always good to visit the white cop who had me hand cuffed in the back seat of his squad car for two hours because he was convinced my wife and I weren't married and that she had Stockholm syndrome. This was not in the 50s. It was 4 years ago.
My dad and uncle didn't hide in a sewage drain for five hours one night running from a lynch mob in New York. My mother wasn't told that black women do their best work on their back by a white HIGHSCHOOL PRINCIPAL in Jersey.
Granted there are racists everywhere and they come in all shapes, colors and sizes, but the vast majority are "real all-american" citizens in the south. Count the number of Confederate flags flying above capital buildings down there and then tell me the south doesn't have a culture that is stuck in a past where white supremacy was even stronger than the government of the country they "say" they love.
Do NOT speak about what you don't know and will never experience. Your and ThinkAgain's fingers keep typing a diatribe of ridiculous, inexperienced bullshit. You may want to see to that.
Right after gettysburg, Lincoln had to send the worn out Army of the Potomac to New york city to quell the race riots.
Thousands o blacks were killed by whites, upset the rich could pay 2oo bucks and get out of being drafted. As if blacks had 200 bucks anyway, much less anything to do with forcing whites to fight for them. Most would have liked a gun, and the right to form their own Brigades to kick some Rebel booty.
baptox - you have absolutely no evidence of Palin ever being "nasty or racially inspired criticism of Obama......ever. This notion came entirely from the leftists blogs who tried to find a way to destroy her during the election.
If anyone is an angry person, it's the liberal by winning hands down. The people who are asking these questions should be aloud to ask. All other presidents have relinquished records and Obama is the only one who hasn't. The right-wing media is doing the job that no other media has done because they are in the tank with Obama's policies.
Your post looks myopic and is untrue with no merit and nothing to back up your hatred.
A few days after Obama cinched the Democratic nomination for president, Sarah Palin was at a restaurant in Alaska where she was heard to say, "So Sambo beat the bitch" (www.laprogressive.com/2008/09/05alaskans-speak-in-a-frightened-whisper-pal in-is-"racist-sexist-vindictive-and-mean"/ and http.//newsone.blackplanet.com//elections/interview-with-charleyjames-on-sa mbogate/. So this is the evidence of Sarah being "nasty" and making "racially inspired criticism" of Obama that you just knew baptox didn't have Also, he has already "relinquished" his records which have been shown all over the news, and if you weren't such a damn ignoramus then you would know that! Birther bonehead!
trueconserv: Palin's nasty criticism of Obama over Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright is everywhere. The raciest aspect? You betcha (wink, wink).
Both Palin and McCain used political-speak buzzwords to tap into fears regarding Barack Obama's religion and race and personal history. McCain finally relented when he had the onerous job of correcting one of the most insane rants of the campaign, one of his ardent supporters at a campaign rally? Remember that?
But Sarah Palin continued her bizarre, hateful "coded" language right to the bitter end. She couldn't speak without mentioning Jeremiah Wright (code words for scary black man) even after Obama had spoken out against him and cut off his relationship with him.
give it up, truconserve. You don't want to believe Obama is an American, no matter what has been shown (birth certificate). You don't like a black man as president, no matter what you say. It is as simple as that.
So you missed her very first speech? Palin got what Palin deserved. Had she taken the high road and acted like she was a true Christian, then she would have spoken differently to her crowds. Her crowds were the first calling for the death of Barack. What Africans did to help the forefathers steal this Country has nothing to do with the stolen wealth that was acquired here, you do realize the forefathers did not send money back to Africa for the Africans help in kidnap. Yes, the forefathers were fake Christians, why else would they use satanic symbols while creating Wash. D.C., why else would many continue worshipping the the Sun instead of the Sabbath? Can you find Sunday in the Bible anywhere? Please, LIE, so are you saying Thomas Jefferson did not comitt adultery?
Here we go....can't we all just be Americans? Some whites hate blacks. Some blacks hate whites? You can't erradicate opinions....as much as you'd like to.
This is just the beginning of something ugly to come. If you can't disagree with someone without being called a racist, then we've come to a bad place in America.
The next step is to declare anyone who runs against the President a bigoted racist in 2012.
I personally don't care what color someone's skin is if they're qualified and do a good job....nut jobs, let go of the hate!
O.k. so please explain why the other 43 presidents were not asked to prove their citizenship or show their birth certificate.
Also recall that President Obama originally CHOOSE to release his birth certificate because the same 'birthers' accused him of being a Muslim with the middle name Mohamed. He released his records to prove the validity of his middle name.
The other 43 presidents didn't spend their childhoods overseas, and are much easier to document.
Also keep in mind that obama is very polarizing because of some very radical and progressive initiatives (not saying they are good or bad), and those who dispise him will do anything they can to get him out of office.
The same thing happened with bush. How many crazies tried to impeach him for being a murder of iraqs or the mastermind behind 9/11. None of this stuff is ever true. This is not racism, its simply american politics
Well. Obama DID practice Islam. That's a fact when he lived in Indonesia. Both his father and his step-father were of Muslim faith. I'm not saying he is now, in fact, I believe that he is a true aetheist as was his mother as well as grandparents.
Second, none of the 43 preceeding presidents went by another name like Obama did as Barry Soerto. He does need to explain how he was able to get a Fullbright scholarship and travel to places like Pakistan when U.S. citizens were not allowed to travel there.
Thrid - previous presidents had released THEIR school records and medical records. Obama has not as of today. Nor has he released his Harvard Law Review articles nor his briefs at his law firm in Chicago. For someone who promised transparency, sure has an opaque way of doing things.
Bush's REAL National Guard records? There is no record of Obamadoing any more than attending a public school in an Islamic nation.
Bush's medical records of his drug and alcohol abuse? Freddo's getting him a Texas jury to hide Bush's DUI?
All you GnOPs need to thank God Almighty that the GnOP SCOTUS gave Bush the 2000 election. Had the recount gone forward, President Gore would be facing the same crap you're using to harrass President Obama.
PRESIDENT OBAMA
Get over it;-)
trueconserv said "Obama DID practice Islam."
One of the many conservative lies about Obama. You have been watching too much Fox News. Oh, and please stop listening to Rush Limbaugh, the great American liar.
What the hell are you talking about? Obama never practiced Islam when he was in Indonesia. His school there has answered that question over and over again. The school is not a madrassas.
And what's this bullshit about "another name?" Barry is simply a form of Barack, and Soetero was his step-father's name.
And tell me--why does he have to release his school records and med records? What business of it is yours? You people are just manufacturing controversy to cover up something else. I wonder what it is?
You people are a bunch of looney-tunes mofo's.
"Well Obama did practice Islam!?!" How do you know? Give us your source. He lived in an Islamic nation and attened a Catholic school. His mother was of no particular religion or demomination. Exactly how much religious practice do you suppose a 6 year old does on his own.
Palin, on the the other hand is shown on video as an adult being exocised by a professed "witch doctor." and Jindal in order to advance his polictical ambitions rejected Hindu, dabbled in VooDoo and after Bush made it into the white house as "born again" decided that might be the band wagon to ride.
There was just reason why our forefathers expressed the separation of church and state. They had been under the tyranny of oppressive theocracy and I, for one, want no part of it. Religion is a cultural universal and, therefore, is deemed by sociologists to fill a universal human need. Many devote atheist turn their disbelief into a religion so the sociologist view is worthy of consideration. That does not, however, give it a place if government where both become corrupted.
If other presidents were not asked to show their birth certificates (every candidate should be required to produce a certified copy of the original) it was probably because they had family, neighbors and friends who knew their parents at the time, saw the baby brought home from the hospital and the circumstances of their family and birth were an open book, previously published, or revealed by the media, doing its proper work of scrutiny.
Obama's birth is shrouded in secrecy because he had his birth records sealed, along with his academic records. Why? Such secrecy is unusual for presidents. In a courtroom, if evidence is denied to the other side, it will be construed strictly against the party concealing it and that is how it is construed by people who ask these questions. Usually the media would be all over it, but not this time. That adds to the mystery.
I'm curious though. Why would it make a difference whether the President's name was Mohammed or Hussein? From what I remember, John McCain forbade anyone to mention Obama's second name. I don't think Mr. Obama mentioned it either, until he was sworn in as President. I guess they both thought Americans might not vote for someone with a Muslim/foreign name and McCain was afraid of being accused of racism or Islamaphobia.
No doubt you will be able to explain why this makes McCain, but not Obama, a xenophobe.
While his school in indonesia was not a madrassas, the school records indicate that "Barry Soetoro" registered as Islamic (can't tell if he was practicing). (Doing a google search for Barry Soetoro will yield you plenty of images of this school record, which by the way, has been verified by the AP)
So maybe the reason President Obama is under a higher level of scrutiny is because his name is muslim, his religion Islam (at one point), and that we are currently at war with radical islam terrorists...
Actually isabella: Obama's records are not sealed, and have been examined by nonpartisan groups.
Also, did you know that there was a "birther" movement against John McCain? He was born in Panama. That movement was crushed, not by McCain, but by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and other democrats who signed a resolution stating that John McCain was a citizen and his citizenship was not to be questioned. Why hasn't anything like this been extended to Obama? He has evidence of his birth. Chris Matthews held up the birth certificate on Hardball. A host sitting in for Lou Dobbs debunked the myth on Lou Dobbs' own show.
There is a lot of fishiness going on here, but none of it is coming from the Obama camp.
"Some white hate blacks. Some blacks hate white..."
This sounds like an attempt to 'call it even', like it's some sort of tossup. Imagine for a second that your grandfather couldn't go to the same restaurants, hotels or even washrooms and had to go to a separate one for second class citizens. This is very recent history. The blacks hating whites thing is way exaggerated too. For example: the vast majority of black people are completely comfortable with their young kids having a white male school teacher while a lot of white people would have a lot of concerns and have to see evidence of excellence to feel comfortable with a black male teaching their kids in the second grade. White people might worry about a black dentist while the opposite is not true.

Natural-Selection: Perhaps we can't eradicate opinions, but we can sure drive them underground, where they will have a much smaller impact on future generations.
The change in opinions on gay marriage is a classic example of this.
Unfortunately, natural-selection, we are not all just going to get along. And, no, in the eyes of many, we are not all Americans.
We have not resolved our racial issues in this country. They are continuously manifested in the political realm by those willing to exploit people's fear of the other.
I-and many others- lived through the George Wallace era and I'm not willing to go back there because a few vocal moral and mental midgets are wanting to drag this country back into racial hatred.
No, even if we digress into point-counterpoint arguments, keeping quiet when the lunatics attempt to reclaim the asylum is not an option.
Here in Canada our Governor General is Michaelle Jean, a Haitian born refugee, who came to Canada in 1968. She is our "Head of State" and Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces.
She is an awesomely intelligent and beautiful woman, in an interracial marriage. She was appointed in 2005, and is well known for her left-of-centre politics, as is her husband.
When President Obama made his brief stop here right after his inauguration, the photographs of them together were enough to take your breath away.
Our previous Governor General was a Chinese Canadian woman, also known for her progressive politics.
We have nine Supreme Court Justices as do you. Five of the nine are women, and the Chief Justice is a woman.
We have legal gay marriage. Universal, government run health care. We are in better shape financially then the U.S.
We are not going to hell in a handbasket. We are actually doing quite fine, thank-you very much.
You should get with the programme and try these things. It is not a bad way to live. Not at all. In fact it is rather lovely.
Don't forget the sustainable logging practices and all that clean air.
Would that we could get with the program, northern friend. Or even just the healthcare part of it. As for elections, I think Arnold Schwarznegger would be a great challenger for Obama in 2012. However, there's the matter of amending the sacred parchment left us by our Founding Ancients. According to that hallowed document, it makes perfect sense for the state of Wyoming, which has more cows than people, to have the same number of Senators as the states of California, New York, and Texas. Not surprisingly those Senators have decided to define democracy as "60% rules" --thus, 40% of this curmudgeonly body can stymie the other house and prevent anything from getting done.
We got the Electoral College as part of the same compromise that deemed non-voting slaves worthy of personhood (3/5 of a person only) for purposes of the census taken in order to allocate numbers of congressmen in the House of Representaitves. There's little evidence that our vaunted bi-cameralism has ever served the purpose it was allegedly created for (stifling mob rule in a unicameral legislative body.) Whether a democracy even needs a constitution should be open to question, since Israel is held up as a paragon of democratic virtue in the Middle East but has never had one in its 60 years of existence.
Democracy is by definition majority rule, but the USA is a republic. A republic is "rule by law" so yes a constitution is necessary. It saddens me to see people sweep away the cornerstone of our nation. Is the Constitution perfect...No. And our founders understood that. That is why amendments are allowed. But I warn you...be careful how quickly you are willing to amend it. Despite what some think there is a wealth of knowledge in that document. The melting pot of America is made up of many national origins. Diversity is great but it requires work for us to coexist. I think it is important to understand that with out "rule by law" we could quite possibly have chaos.
As we advance we seem to forget that others have been through what we are going through. It might be wise to step back from our situation and think about that. Our founders were not dumb, racist, bigots. They were imperfect people trying to build the foundation of a free nation. I think they did an incredible job. Rather than scrap what they started lets build on the foundation.
I thought that you were going to say that the Constitution has to be amended so that foreign-born citizens like Arnold (who is from Austria) can run for POTUS - not go into all this stuff about the number of senators or the Electoral College, which has nothing to do with that. I also remember how surprised and aghast many people were when Arnold was elected the governator of California. I and many other people thought that it was stupid and absurd for him to have won, and we just couldn't believe it. One guy at a store I went to said that people in Cali "always do stuff that is f**ed up". So I can't imagine why anyone would want him to run for POTUS! HAHAHAHAHAH!
"Ronald Reagan, the actor? Who's Vice President. Mickey Mouse?" -"Doc" Emmet Brown in Back To The Future.
One would think that we'd had enough of Hollywood trying to run the country already. If The Terminator becomes POTUS by some weird miracle, I'm moving. Never mind, "where".
kokuaguy - We do not have a democracy. The founding fathers were scared stiff of pure democracy. We have a republic. The founding fathers were incredibly brilliant in creating our constiution. Unfortunately, this president is trying to destroy it and has said that he wants to re-write it.
kokuaguy said: "There's little evidence that our vaunted bi-cameralism has ever served the purpose it was allegedly created for (stifling mob rule in a unicameral legislative body.)"
Actually, our bicameralism has served its purpose very well. Without it, the smaller states would never have ratified our Constitution in 1789, since they were very afraid (and rightfully so) of being overwhelmed by their larger neighbors, such as New York. The black 3/5 personhood and the Electoral College were also compromises without which this country might not exist.
The Senate representation and the Electoral College will never change, as the smaller states will not give up their relatively-large power even today.
trueconserv said: "Unfortunately, this president is trying to destroy it and has said that he wants to re-write it."
Actually, you are referring to George W. Bush, the creator (along with Dick Cheney) of unlimited Presidential powers, such as torture and unrestricted domestic spying, that were (and still are) unconstitutional.
Another reason to like Canada!
(Contrary to right-wing rumors, the Canadians like their health insurance system.)
The Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey shows 82 per cent of Canadians believe their system is better than U.S. health care.
Currently, 47 million U.S. citizens have none. The U.S. also has the highest health-care costs of any country in the industrialized world.
The poll also suggests 70 per cent of Canadians think their health-care system is working well or very well.
Don't forget the only people that ever ran to Canada are draft dodgers.....
With all over your social progression, you'd think you'd be a world power by now?
Believe it or not, not every nation desires world dominance. International cooperation and respect for our common resources would suit this Canadian just fine.
I wouldn't trade our health care system for any other. Especially the U.S. system. I've never waited for a treatment of any sort in my 50 plus years. The television adverts that we see here on CNN etc., smashing our system would be laughable if they were not so cleverly construed to dupe the Americans into believing that profit driven care somehow trumps patient driven care. They lie. There is nothing laughable about that.
I have many many friends and colleagues who were once American citizens. True some of them were draft dodgers. We welcomed them...who could have supported that rotten fiasco in Viet Nam?
Others chose to be here.
I like Americans. I really like your new president. I just don't care for the politics.
@chekof
"Believe it or not, not every nation desires world dominance."
Do you mean nations who desire world dominance such as RUSSIA ?
You're rewriting history, naturalselection. The people who went to Canada wer PROTESTING THE WAR, and thank God, they did. Their actions eventually stopped the war. You know, we have been at war perpetually since the second world war, and we never won any of them! Not Korea, not Viet Nam and we won't win in Iraq or Afghanistan. Remember these wordsp
And when any of these fine Canadians need serious medical care, they secretly head for the United States where no one (rich or poor) waits for an MRI or life-saving surgery.
Yes, that's the right winger Conventional Wisdom. Long lines of Canadians waiting at our northern borders to get decent medical care. The insurance industry told them about it!
The Canadians I know laugh when they hear that characterization. Like most of the Republican version of Barack's health care reform, it has no basis in fact. And that's why the Rethugs are using disruptive loudmouthing to ruin town hall meetings on the subject--because they can't discuss the issues based on facts.
These unsupported anecdotes about Canadians running to the US for good health care are so tiresome. Instead of repeating this garbage, why don't some of you find and present some real evidence? Actual numbers showing the failure of the Canadian health system? You'll have a hard time, because it has been shown that most Canadians seeking healthcare in the US were simply in the US when their problem/injury struck. Others come here because Canada is simply a much smaller (by population) nation and cannot support every kind of specialty and treatment under the sun; this would be true no matter how their healthcare was funded. And anyone who thinks you are guaranteed quick service in the U.S. doesn't have a clue.
tankertodd said: "And when any of these fine Canadians need serious medical care, they secretly head for the United States where no one (rich or poor) waits for an MRI or life-saving surgery."
Canadians heading for the United States has long been refuted, except when they want treatment not covered by Canadian health care, usually experimental stuff.
As for nobody in the United States (rich or poor) waiting for an MRI or life-saving surgery, ask the 22,000 uninsured Americans who die each year.
Bulls--t. That is a lie perpetuated by Americans who don't want healthcare reform.
You also have long lines to get an aspirin and you depend on the US for protection. Take off, hoser.
Sorry flyoverland. I've never stood in line for any sort of medical care,or medication. One can see any doctor, GP or specialist, of their choosing.
My medication is covered by the government pharmacare programme, and I pay no premiums for medical coverage. Only 3 provinces in Canada charge premiums (which they shouldn't) and those are nominal. Usually 35 dollars a month or thereabouts.
As for depending on America for protection. Read your history. The only country to invade Canada, EVER, was the U.S.
I am an American and I get my precription drugs from Canada and they are so much CHEAPER. You can't refute that because I know it is true!!
Then why isn't Canada the leader of the world? Canada has incredibly bad health care problems. Your president is a conservative which makes your economy better. You don't share the same freedoms as the U.S. does. You drill off your shores which means you get it about drilling "there" instead of foreign places that hate us. As with most liberals who hate the U.S., if they want to go to Canada...don't stop and please pack quickly.
We don't have a president trueconserv. We have a Prime Minister.
True he is a conservative, however he (Harper) heads a minority government, with the Liberal party and the New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois carrying the majority votes. These three parties are all left of centre. They obviously can vote "no confidence" at any time and bring Harper down. I wish that they would.
If you are interested in reading about our health care system, it is all there online.
I suspect though, from reading your other posts, that you are only interested in regurgitating the right wing drivel fed to you by big insurance and pharmaceutical companies.
And what "freedoms" don't we share with America? The freedom not to go bankrupt from illness? The freedom to marry whom we please? The freedom to not have religion injected into any public realm? The freedom to not have handguns?
Certainly we have our problems with racism like any other country on the face of this earth. But nothing even close to what you unfortunately experience. The slaves fled here through the underground railroad don't forget.
chekov: You are my new best friend. Thank you for standing up for Canada (which you wouldn't think anyone would have to).
trueconserv: You are an idiot.
...Could we transfer the southern states, Alaska and parts of the west to Canada? We might be a halfway civilized country the....
Wow! Haitian born, female, inter-racial marriage, left-of-centre politics and brilliant to boot. Hard to top that, but next time you might be really lucky and find a Cuban-born, Communist, little person, Rhodes scholar, transgender or transexual, married to an Inuit bisexual or heterosexual and who steadfastly refuses to speak French. Or English either, for that matter, but insists Canadians should all speak Spanish to rid themselves of any remnant nationalism caused by their two official languages and bid welcome to the immigrants that will be flooding in from south of the Border any day now as jobs dry up down here. What a coup that would be!
That is pretty funny! How clever of you. Speaking of Cuba, when our former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau died in 2002, Fidel Castro was one of his pall bearers at his funeral in Montreal, as was Jimmy Carter.
Yes, the Communist hoards were right at your doorstep! I don't recall any attempted coup.
This might be the worst article I've read on TDB.
The truth hurts......speaking of racists....how could this happen in a Judeo Christian nation?......NOT!!
The Roman Catholic Church ruled the European world for 1260 years with an iron fist. During those years the Holy Word of God, the Bible, was a forbidden book..." Who in today's time has more power than the POPE?
The Pontifex Maximus religious system was proven to be an imposter system then, and still is today, and hates all servants of the True God who expose it.
To reemphasize a previous statement, that history really wants to keep silent about, is the fact that
"all" historical world kingdoms or empires that have ever arose on earth had as their rulers the same
priest-"god"-king system, whether they called their rulers pharaoh or Pontifex Maximus, they
considered themselves gods who demanded worship.
Instantly, this must be seen as an ingredient that produces a fierce struggle and to cause bitter
hatred. Roman caesars were also the Pontifex Maximus. Certainly, most everyone can recall
Roman history when early Christians were fed to the lions for the entertainment of the citizens of
Rome. Why? Merely because true Christians refused to give recognition of worship to caesar as God. The Pontifex Maximus false religious system hates the worship of the True God, and hates true Christianity.
OHNOTAGAIN,
And if EVERY religion claims the TRUE GOD
and fights and dies and rules for the TRUE GOD
and you talk of the TRUE GOD
then
Who is the TRUE GOD??!
(I like, "Each of us is the True God")
(See Ginsburg, Rimaud, Blake, Budda, Hindu Deities, etal.)
keepakeeper43:
There is only but one TRUE God, that is the point. Have you looked at the back of your dollar bill lately? That is not a old folks tale. Think and say whatever you like, but the symbols, loud and clear speak for themselves.
Have you ever noticed how everyone says their God in the ture God? If every religion has a hell-like dimension where you go after death if you are not a believer, and no one can be in two religions at once, wouldn't that mean that regardless we'll all end up in hell?
I'm a Christian, but I have studied other religions and many of my friends practice other religions. The amazing thing I've found is that at the core of every religion, particularly teistic religions, is the same thing. There are values like goodness, love, kindness to strangers, charity and humility. The rest many times is just fluff.
And here's the kicker. Particularly in American politics, the right lays claim to Christianity. Many of these people don't understand the faith. For example: the Obama is a Muslim argument. They don't know that Allah is the same God as Jehovah. If you try to tell them, they try to kill you.
What really gets their goat is when you tell them that Jesus wasn't a conservative. He wasn't. He was a liberal. He'd love universal healthcare, civil rights for everyone, and a world power that would rather take care of its people instead of blowing up others.
Or at least the worst string of reader comments...It always seems to degenerate into "My USA can beat up your USA.". There's only one USA, folks. Work for it and earn your liberties!
Well said. What a treat, to encounter sanity in this endless craziness masquerading as commentary on a blog!
What a sad day.
"and we are not saved..."
For awhile I thought Obama's election had made racial identification on par with membership in the Chuck E. Cheese Club. Apparently, I was being an idiot.
The Columnist is correct.
Racial paranoia on the " right. "
Such as New York DEMOCRAT Carolyn Maloney
using the " N " word
a few weeks ago.
Where was the left media on that story ?
If Maloney was Republican the left media
would have been all
that story like flies on shot.
Such as DEMOCRAT Robert Byrd,
former member of the KKK.
Such as DEMOCRAT Barbara Boxer's
condescending racial remarks
to the head of the black chamber of commerce Harry Alford.

When it comes to race. White people have honesty on their side:
http://americaspeaksink.com/2009/07/lets-talk-about-race/
Honesty about being racists. White people have hatred against white people, ie., non christians vs christians, vs jews. History has be rewritten for convenience. Look to your dollar bill and then explain to me why, the satanic symbols? White people have also been lied to, they can not help their pasts. It is important to repent and realize that to worship a man, such as the POPE, is sinful. No "true" Christian even for a moment would ever consent to give worship to a mere mortal of a man. Explain the sacred Sun symbol, the obelisk? What about the inverted pentagram?PLEEZE!!
You are here for that Sophia panderer.
To call out the Democrats, there must be a term for your often used "reasoning", what, pure nastiness.
@ cheenthere
What is it about far left liberals who can't stomach the truth
about your party.
Liberals seem all too willing and comfortable
labeling REPUBLICANS as the party of racists.
Take a look at that Barbara Boxer video.
WHAT ARE YOU SO AFRAID OF ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FE_jGD5nZ6U
Will you feel better if I mention REPUBLICAN examples of racist remarks.
Here you go. Feel better ?
REPUBLICAN George Allen called an Indian American
a "macaca," a racist statement.
REPUBLICAN Trent Lott made a racist remark at Strom Thurmond's
100th birthday.
What far left liberals don't understand is racism runs in all sectors
of society, including DEMOCRATS and many people in the Northeast,
not just the "yahoo" south.
A kick in the head, ain't it ?
sophia5: While it is certainly true that racism runs in all sectors
of society, it's about 50% in Republicans, while only 5% in Democrats.
You have just touched the tip of the iceberg in Republican racism. I could dig up thousands of current examples, but why bother. Conservatives like you have an amazing capability to ignore facts.
"Reality has a liberal bias."
i am not surprised that the liberal press is attacking the right as racist. it didnt take long, i am also not surprseide that the obama alone when he put his foot in his mouth about gates. the right knew that the liberal press would play that race card everytime the disagree with obama. its a good thing bush wasnt black - the way the press treated him was inhumane.
The way the press "treated" Bush was inhumane? The press let Bush literally get away with murder. Because they bought the weapons of mass destruction argument hook, line and sinker, Bush was able to invade Iraq on false pretenses and involve our country in a war in which we still haven't been able to extricate ourselves.
When Bush got tired of questions that were finally posed to him, he simply stopped giving press conferences and retreat to the White House.
Go back to your golf game or read a little history before you post such ignorant comments.
The depths of liberal sanctimony are truly unfathomable. Yglesias decries "the willingness of prominent media figures to indulge in wild attacks on Obama" while ignoring the contempt and ridicule routinely accorded to Obama's predecessor by "prominent media figures". Ah, but that was for a noble cause, wasn't it? Get over it, Matty boy, this is the Age of the Internet. The birther controversy at this point is being largely promoted by the left (viz. MSNBC) as a political tactic. Likewise, the eager dropping of the race card by Yglesias is a reprise of Obama campaign tactics, largely successful, which were used to counter uncomfortable criticism of their candidate. Just please spare us the sanctimony.
Racism has been just another arrow in the quiver of the rightwing in America for as long as I can remember. Back in the 1960s, while we were marching for civil rights for all, the Republican Party and their criminal-president du jour, Nixon, were calling for "Law and order," a euphemism for cracking down on protesters and various civil rights groups.
Racism is alive and well today as evidenced by the likes of Flush Limbaugh, Goon-ball Beck, and the "Birthers."
Xenophobia is part of the human condition. So we must continually expose the sick racists amongst us, and enforce laws that prohibit racism, homophobia and other acts of irrational hatred.
Periscope is right. Race baiting is just a hook, like law & order, family values, boot straps & all the rest. Now, unfortunately it just play to a narrow base - & contrary to what Matt thinks there is very little $$ coming from the fringe- with the hope it will "hook" a larger movement. The repubs. really don't know what they are looking for exactly. Any "insurgency" will do @ this point & once again the should be careful about what they are advocating & inciting. While they no longer ask WWJD they might just be expressing quite clearly what kind of country they think they want. Poor, backward & racist.
But what if Brit Hume were right? I am not a 'birther' and do my darndest to promote (literally and figuratively) the minority cause. BUT, should I ever mention crime statistics or lifestyle choices I get labeled a racist. Happened yesterday. I am not a racist, but am muffled by those who abuse to term.
CountRaoul - being fair and reasonable won't provide you with protection from someone who has something to gain (like the author) by yelling racist. Best to ignore the whole thing.
Hume's comments are strikingly correct. He outlined the misuse of the term "racist" that the writer wields so disrespectfully. The real sufferers of racism should be just as angry with him as Jews are angry with those who compare trivialities to the Holocaust. To cheapen the Holocaust or Racism leads us down the path of abiding those horrors.
Sorry, tankertodd, but I'm not buying. Racism, like any other "ism" always begins with subtle propaganda. There is a definite correlation between nazi propaganda and the propaganda of the right-wingers.
Jew were ridiculed and characterized as "foreigners not to be trusted" much as the far right is attempting to characterize President Obama. They are hoping that the incremental fears that are raised about his religion, patriotism or citizenship will chip away at his credibility.
This is an old propaganda technique resurrected by the right wing to undermine President Obama because they couldn't defeat him at the polls.
I'm sure it's just a coincidence that the high crime rates are in the poorest districts of our country, where the schools are third rate, unemployment is high and the drug dealers are unperturbed by the police.
The fact that most of these are black neighborhoods, must be the "real" reason crime is so high!
periscope,
You ALMOST had it right. I was rooting for you. If you had ended your post without including the last line, then I would have totally agreed with you. Those issues are bot a "black" thing. They are present in any and all poor and economically depressed areas. You will find them all over this county. For every poor urban area filled with crack dealers there is a comparable trailer park filled with meth addicts. Pretending that these problems are due to race is ridiculous. Unemployment, crime and out of wedlock births are tied to economic development and educational opportunities. You were so close Periscope......yet so far away.
My last line was ironic. Perhaps I messed it up. I'm not saying the problems are due to people being black, but it's due to the historical conditions I mentioned previously.
An extraordinarily large percentage of blacks are poor, which accounts in part for their high crime rates.
This is certainly a direct result of slavery, segregation, and other forms of racial discrimination over the last 200 years. And note how attempts to overcome this poverty are shouted down by conservatives as "racial discrimination" against whites.
The president is as much white as he is black. To consider him black is to judge him by the color of his skin and is truly racist.
not sure i read anywhere that he was being criticized as a black man. they are criticizing his actions....does that make us a racist??? if he is going follow his agenda, just like any other president then he will be the most criticized man in the world, just like any other president, dont treat him any differently just because he is black. he has to take the heat just any other president.
I agree. This Matthew guy is totally lost in his article.
The President considers himself to be black and he has explained the reason why on more than one occassion. You see, in this country, skin color matters. It matters not that his mother was white or that he was raised by his white grandmother. His life experiences aren't exactly the usual "black" experience in America. BUT when he steps outside of his home and people see him, they see a black man. They don't see his experiences and they don't see his mother. They see a black man. Do you dispute this?
If Obama had been in Selma, Alabama, in the 1950s, he would certainly have been sitting in the back of the bus.
True. And one of his ancestors kept slaves. Obama is not descended from slaves, but from slave owners. It was barely mentioned by the major media during the election, but it might explain why he chooses to think of himself as black, rather than identifying with the grandparents who gave him the upbringing and life skills he used to such dramatic effect.
I wonder if most black Americans know it. The flourishing victim movement depends on remembering and hating/distrusting slaveowners and by extension, today's white Americans, but I think 98% of black voters supported Obama. That isn't racism, of course, as it would be if the same percentage of white voters supported McCain.
Imagine the media circus if John McCain's ancestors were slave owners?
Not that there's a double standard going on here.
Rednecks Unite, Take Back the Night!
You can have the night, Pal. The rest of us will bask in the glorious light of the day.
Yea, Bubbas. Don't forget your white hoods and ropes! This time though, go play erotic asphyxiation games with each other!
What a bunch of TRIPE.. off course I am not surprised with this article since it was written by this guy. The true racist here is the author of this piece and OBAMA. By jumping into a local situation regarding a black friend and speaking STUPIDLY about something he knew nothing about, Obama put his own racism on blatant display. I was glad about this since many white people really thought he was trying to be far and balanced....what a joke.
So it is racism for the president to comment it was stupid to arrest a man in his own home? That makes Obama racist? And of course you are not a racist at all, are you? Obama knew nothing about the Gates arrest? Are you kidding me? It was all over the news!!! And of course Gates was at fault because he got uppity. When a man is at fault for being angry about being rousted in his own home, and his expression of unhappiness is seen as justification for his arrest - throw the constitution out the window.
Amen Picachu!
By the time Obama weighed in, the arrest had been rescinded - a "stupid" arrest. Obama saved Crowley from a lawsuit or worse.
What do you think the reaction of the public would be, if the black man inside of the house was not gates, and fearing the public outcry of the or too PC nation, the cop decides to simply walk away from the house and not cause any problems. Meanwhile, gates returns hours later to find all of his possesions taken.
Picachu, you are so wrong. The cop took the propper course of action by asking gates to prove it was his own house (same protocal would follow for a white man). Gates understandably got angry, and the situation escalated. The cop was doing his job, and gates reacted. The police officer certainly was not out of line for arresting gates, better safe than sorry. The real issue here is that gates happens to be black, meaning this becomes a race issue. If this happened to a white guy, what would have happened?
Dobbs revealed his nasty racist selft last year during a Rushpublican "Values Voter" event that had some nice, racist gifts you could buy - a box Obama Waffles mix. Obama was portrayed as a cartoonish black figure and then in Arab headdress - but it was a joke, the inventers said.
However, Dobbs got his photo taken with a box and claimed that his wife would "love" it.
Since Sophia's such a historian:
The news did cover Maloney's N word - and she's currently 'considering' her options about running against Gillibrand - I know this and I live in CO, not NY
Byrd is now a former member of the KKK - he's admitted it and it's been known for forever - what's important about it now? The KKK's primary members now are right leaning and "christian" - nice, huh?
I heard in the news - several outlets, MSNBC being one of them, about Boxer's remarks. I thought they were appalling..but again, did she go to the level of Beck, Hannity or Rush - not even close. Try again.
This story hits home at the right time - The Guardian in the UK has just released an article that threats against the current President are up 400% over the past President - to me, it can only be explained out by the extreme idiots that cannot conceive that a non-white man is in the White House as President. Anyone else have a better explanation????
I'm expecting a new Lou Dobbs news show on Fox News any day now... He will fit right in with Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and Bill O'Reilly.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing Dobbs on Fox. Rupert Murdoch is a very hateful man to collect almost all the racists pundits in America under one umbrella.
I'm still waiting for Glenn Beck -- or one of his "dittoheads" -- to provide a comprehensive definition/history of "white culture."
I'm white, and I have no idea in hell what he's talking about.
You know, like that stuff they got in museums, like that Cezanne guy.......oh, forget it, he's French.
Or, ya know, his family came over on the original Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria and he's really a daughter of the revolution....ah, but he's a reformed man and now a Morman to boot - how can he square his bona fides with those of Barak Obama regarding health care? See the link below...
Beck is an uneducated, wet-brain "reformed" alcoholic - how on earth can he intelligently speak about anything?
Don't know if y'all remember, but when Glenn had a bad hemmoroid surgery, he recorded this video - I can't tell if it's a screed against his 'health care' provider or against the process.....I provide, you decide:
www.cnn.com/2008/health/01/010/beckhealthcare
It's his own personal rant and I think it deviates 180 from the bullshit he spews on Fox today. Different channel different view, huh?
Yglesias writes: "Also nevermind that most experts believe Obama would, in fact, qualify as a natural-born citizen even if he had been born in Indonesia or Kenya."
Article II doesn't mean what it says? Has the Supreme Court considered it? When?
Unfortunately, Yglesias leaves the statement hanging, unsupported by evidence.
Where has this been discussed by "experts" and where were their views published?
Children born to US civilian citizens abroad would like to know more.
Which "experts" think a foreign-born American can be president? What argument avoids the Constitutional requirement?
If true, it's more than a little strange that these "expert" opinions are only now being discussed. If untrue, the author is just another hack spreading convenient lies to placate partisan readers, but if anyone has more information, please publish it.
Isabella, you just don't get it, do you? The only reason these "expert" opinons are being discussed now is because of the stupid birthers. And the Supreme Court has not considered the question of who is natural-born because we've never had a president with a skin color that wasn't white. John McCain was born in a Panamanian (non-U.S.) hospital but I never saw the wingnut right getting uptight about that.
I get it, Tmikes. You don't and neither does the author.
"Stupid" applies to people who believe the spin out of Washington without making their own inquiries.
If the Supreme Court hasn't considered it, the Constitutional provision applies. It has nothing to do with skin color and only someone obsessed with race would suggest such a thing.
The question for Yglesia (and you) remains: who are "most experts" who believe the President would qualify "even if he was born in Indonesia or Kenya"......in spite of the Constitution?
Name them and let's hear them explain how their opinions override the Constitution. I'm betting this is the first you've ever heard of this innovative Constitutional interpretation too.
Clearly they are not experts in Constitutional Law..
Just as clearly, Yglesia's is a mischievous suggestion designed to obfuscate and conceal the truth and stop all these rude, ordinary, people asking questions they have no right to ask of the powerful. That's why the spinmeisters call them "birthers" and other childish names, to characterize them as stupid so their questions can be dismissed without answers.
The spin team is working overtime on this site, but only the really blinkered or really dumb will buy this little gem.
PS: McCain was born to a serving member of the US military and qualifies as native-born. The question was asked and answered during the campaign.
Look, dumbass, anyone born to an American person abroad is automatically an American citizen, for your information. My Dutch friend said we are the only country that does this. Her children were born in the U.S. and they were not claimed by Holland as citizens. Look it up. Obama was born in Hawaii, an American state, in case you didn't know. My granddaughter was born in Canada and she is an American citizen, in fact, she has dual citizenship.
Let me get this right: If A and B get involved in an incident, and C says that he does not know what the facts are but he thinks A is stupid, C is not biased? Really? I will try and remember that. I do not want to throw wild accusations at C.
The Cambridge DA had already said it was a "stupid" arrest. All Obama did was save Crowley from a lawsuit.
"C" said he did not know what ALL of the facts were, but he obviously knew enough of the facts to make a reasonable inference, which was later upheld.
Your not wanting to throw wild accusations at C is quite sarcastic. If it were true, you would not have commented here.
As far as I could see these people proved just how far in the gutter they were willing to go during the election last year. I was genuinely surprised Obama survived the deluge of hate rhetoric coming from the angry right. If it had been 20 years before I don't think he would have. People weren't quite as wise to the Republican smear machine then as they are today. When people at a political rally start screaming 'kill him' you know it's gone to far. In fact, I think in the end it really hurt McCain's chances in the election. It made a lot of people realize what the Republican Party has become over the last 30 years. They have become infested with hateful angry people capable of almost anything.
black folks have been surviving hate for 400 years we are still standing.
hard to keep a great person down no matter what color you are
Is this a great country or what? We are so into diversity and tolerance that we elect our first foreign born president. It makes me proud to be an American.
Why are you being sarcastic about such an important issue? You obviously don't take this computerized exchange of well thought-out ideas seriously.
Shame on you!
...And you, offenbachStutz, have no inkling how humor is often used to make a serious point!
I don't? Jeez!
I think the majority of people know who the real racists are, and what network their tv shows are on. Anybody who spends any amount of time listening to some of these people knows who and what they are. Their behavior is unjustifiable, and they can call the president racist all they want - it doesn't change what is readily self-evident to any person who can do a little critical thinking.
Thank you.
