A Bush Goes to War

The Bush family’s fourth-generation standard-bearer, Jeb's son George P., talks exclusively with The Daily Beast about his new deployment overseas—and plots his political future in Texas.
Even though we just trudged out of the last Bush era, everyone wants to know when George P. Bush, Jeb Bush’s eldest son and the family’s fourth-generation standard-bearer, is going to run for something. But P., as he’s known, has bigger things on his mind. He’s thinking about parachuting onto the frontlines of his uncle’s War on Terror.
Lt. Junior Grade Bush, 33, joined the Navy Reserve in 2007 as an intelligence officer. The Navy recently told him, like thousands of others, that the two ongoing wars required him to go active-duty overseas, potentially in Iraq or Afghanistan. “It’s been communicated to me that it’s not a question of ‘if,’ it’s a question of ‘when,’” Bush told The Daily Beast. “It’s just a matter of time.”
George P. Bush is co-founding Hispanic Republicans of Texas, a political action committee for which he will do the unglamorous work of recruiting candidates.
Bush’s Prince Harry moment is the latest and most unusual chapter in the life of the political scion. When he came on the political scene in 2000, as a TV-ready spokesman for his uncle’s presidential campaign, P. was named one of People magazine’s sexiest men and considered an amusing presence. Now, in addition to his military service, Bush is assembling an ambitious political program in Texas devoted to one of his family’s most cherished issues. With his uncle and dad in semi-retirement, P. has become the de facto keeper of what his grandfather once called the “legacy thing.”
The name George Bush still draws a crowd in Texas. When George P. and his wife Mandi moved to Austin last October, where his private-equity firm relocated, it was announced in the local papers. (Similarly, when he criticized Gov. Charlie Crist last month for excess spending, he made headlines in his native Florida.) Eric Opiela, the executive director of the Republican Party of Texas and Bush’s friend since law school, said that George P. had waited for George W.’s presidency to end before jumping into politics with both feet.
Bush’s primary mission in Texas is to mend fences with Hispanic voters. This is a Bush family obsession. Hispanics flocked to both of George W.’s presidential campaigns—by some estimates he won 44 percent of their vote in 2004. Then, just as dramatically, those voters switched to Barack Obama last year; McCain won only 31 percent of the Hispanic vote. “Personally, I think it’s disappointing,” George P. said ruefully.
“The immigration debate was very divisive,” Bush said, referring to the insurrection Republicans staged against his uncle in 2007. “I think it turned off not only a lot of first-generation Hispanics but second- and third-generation Hispanics, as well. In 2008, Barack Obama did a phenomenal job of reaching out to minority groups, to younger people, and a lot of newer voters, Hispanics being one component of that definition of newer voters.” George P., whose mother Columba is from Mexico, is charged with wooing those voters back.
The Bush strategy is two-fold. On camera, George P. is the Texas GOP’s smiling face on Telemundo and Univision, the hugely popular Spanish-language TV stations. Bush will come on TV to talk about anything—even inane stuff like Cinco de Mayo parades—in order to evangelize for the GOP. Behind the scenes, Bush is co-founding Hispanic Republicans of Texas, a political action committee for which he will do the unglamorous work of recruiting candidates.
It’s eerily reminiscent of George P.’s bridge-building during the 2000 presidential campaign, when he would reel off George W.’s accomplishments in Spanish and then declare, “His name is the same as mine!” “There’s definitely a personal connection, I won’t dismiss that,” Bush said in the interview. “There’s a definitely a sense of connection that my family feels toward the community. But also certainly an opportunity for the Republican Party when thinking about this in the longer term.”
Some Republicans are pining for George P. to take the legacy thing by the horns and run for office, never mind that his uncle’s popularity has fallen below 35 percent in Texas. “I think he could easily be elected to any statewide office, senator or governor, in the next four to eight years,” said Lionel Sosa, a Texas-based GOP consultant. Sosa recalled an episode from the 2000 Bush campaign in which George P., then in his mid-20s, met with the United Farm Workers in San Bernardino, California. Sosa said that dozens of farm workers, most of them Democrats, approached Bush and predicted he would be the first Latino president.
Others like Opiela, of the Texas GOP, are more circumspect. “That’s his decision,” he said. “He’d be a great candidate for office. And I think he will. Give it some time.”
But what’s clear is that P. has borrowed the constituent parts—mostly the admirable ones—from all the Bush family patriarchs. His Hispanic outreach recalls the campaigns of George W. and Jeb; his easygoing manner, his uncle; his military service, if it comes to fruition, his grandfather (and if it doesn’t, his uncle’s stint in the Texas Air National Guard). Echoing the calls of all three Bushes, George P. said politics would wait until he had succeeded on his own in private industry.
Meanwhile, P. said he was happy to find that all three men suddenly had time to devote to him. He meets with George W. Bush in the former president’s Dallas office perhaps four times a year to talk business. He spent the weekend of Oct. 17 and 18 in Florida watching college football with his parents. The week before that, Bush spent two nights in Houston with his grandfather, George H.W., in advance of the elder Bush’s meeting with Barack Obama. Bush 41, a decorated naval pilot in World War II, counseled his grandson to savor his moments with family before he has to ship out.
Was P. scared? “The intel guys are typically inside the wire,” he said. “It’s the guys who wage the real war who put themselves in real danger. I’m the guy that helps them find the battlespace and informs them with the latest and greatest information to help them defeat the enemy.”
“From the personal safety standpoint,” George P. added, “I’m probably the last guy that will be in harm’s way.”

That's where the similarity ends, because, unfortunately for us, while the Kennedys believe in serving the public, the Bushs believe the public is here to serve them.
Poor 'P'. You know he held on as long as he could before signing up to get his military credentials. He had to do it before running - since no Bush has put their ass on the line for any of their wars-for-profit since WWII. P sure as hell wasn't going to sign on for Iraq when W was in a rush to invade - although he was all over the place selling his uncle's war, he wouldn't sign up to serve when the going looked dangerous. Now, he probably figures he can slide in, have a couple of photo-ops for future campaigns, and get the hell back to Texas.

I'll take the commie way over corporations controlling the government any day. Cuba has much better health care than the US. So what if they don't have free elections? They all have roofs over their heads, plenty of food to eat, and the highest literacy rate in this hemisphere.
Not to mention, when a hurricane comes, the government packs each family up along with their furniture and personal belongings, and moves them to safety, then back again when the danger has passed. Compare that to New Orleans.

People say mean things about Carl Rove; but he made it clear that the best criterion for choosing a president is whether you would be inclined to buy him a beer at the local tavern. Now that should be how our presidents are chosen. What's with all this emphasis on education and experience? Anybody can be a decider. All they have to do is be from a good family and follow their gut. So it's also very important to elect a president with a smart gut. Roadhunter, I can see you've never traveled to Cuba, plenty of food to eat? Or actually been to a Communist country like China, N Korea? I've been to China, India, Peru, Mexico, Jamaica, Cambodia, El Salvador, Panama, and the US is by far the best country ever. If you consider living in a house the size of closet than go to Cuba. If you consider eating grass and roots, and leaves as plenty of food go to NKorea. Free health care go to China, where they sterilize the handicaped, the mental patients, those who disagree with the government policies. Stop trashing our great country.

As a veteran from a real military family, a little respect is all I have - VERY little. This is nothing but political theatre for a future run.
I don't believe for one minute that this is about actually "serving" his country. I remember him out on the campaign trail, selling the invasion of Iraq, claiming it was necessary for our very survival. If invading Iraq was about saving this country, why didn't he join up to serve then? He was a rich business man in TX, and apparently that was more of a priority to him than saving us from what HE described as a serious threat to our very existence.
NOW we should believe he's all about service. I don't think so.
And if you believe for one minute that his service will resemble real military service, I have a spot in the Texas Air National Guard I'll sell you.

At least George P. serves his country, that's more than I can say for many in his generation. If you recall, his grandfather was shot down in WW2 and became President of the United States. George W. served in the National Guard and also became President. His father was Governor of Florida and has served the people in all sorts of emergencies. The Bush family is the real deal but they don't need me to defend them.

Jeb left Florida in a financial mess; Dubya left the entire USA in a similar mess that only throwing good money after his bad seems to be having any effect. Dems are left to clean up Gitmo, Iraq, Afghanistan, too. G. Prescott's "safe" turn at establishing a military record is consistent with Uncle Dubya's service record.

If by serving, you mean did he serve in the military, then no. But then neither did the patron saint of Republicans, Ronald Reagan. And if REALLY serving in the military (as opposed to prancing around in military gear) meant anything to Republicans, then they wouldn't (a) have impugned a real war hero (John Kerry); or (b) continue to deny vets their basic benefits.

Ronald Wilson Reagan enrolled in a series of home-study Army Extension Courses on 18 March 1935. After completing 14 of the courses, he enlisted in the Army Enlisted Reserve on 29 April 1937, as a Private assigned to Troop B, 322nd Cavalry at Des Moines, Iowa. He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on 25 May 1937. On June 18 of that year Reagan, who had just moved to Los Angeles to begin his film career, accepted his Officer's Commission and was assigned to the 323rd Cavalry.
Lieutenant Reagan was ordered to active duty on 19 April 1942. Due to eyesight difficulties, he was classified for limited service only, which excluded him from serving overseas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California, as liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office. Upon the request of the Army Air Forces (AAF), he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF on 15 May 1942; the transfer was approved on 9 June 1942. He was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the 1st Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, California. Reagan was promoted to First Lieutenant on 14 January 1943 and was sent to the Provisional Task Force Show Unit of This Is The Army at Burbank, California. Following this duty, he returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit, and on 22 July 1943 was promoted to Captain.

As someone who earned top honors with a law degree from Harvard, he gave up a very lucrative opportunity to earn big bucks on Wall Street (unlike George P here) to take a low-paying job as a community organizer in Chicago. He helped poor and disenfranchised people get together to rid their neighborhoods of gang activity and got them involved in the political process. How is that not serving your country?

If you will remember, Obama was one of the few who told the truth about Iraq from the start and voted against invading - and he was right. P was out selling the war he refused to fight. BIG difference.
Obama sees the big picture - waiting until war is inevitable means you waited too long. The time to fight wars is when you can stop them from starting in the first place. But you have to have someone in office who gets that - and no Bush ever has, and that's because Bushes see war as a revenue stream.

Antonio Villaraigosa - intelligent. He couldn't get into any accredited law school, so he paid for his law degree from an unaccredited "law school" (and that's being very liberal saying that). Intelligent - yes, he knows how to play the card, mayor of the second largest Mexican citizen inhabitated city, only after years of being a member of a seccionist and racist organization. You should come to LA to see just how great this guy is.

Michelle Obama: "For the first time in my life I am proud of my Country". Only proud of her country because of self-gain. I've lived in four different countries (other than US), and have visited more than 30. I've never held political office or profited it from and I am proud of the US. It didn't take me or a family member being elected to political office to be proud of the US. People like her are dangerous to the liberty of this country.

With the comments above we see just how liberals feel about our fine men and women who serve their country. Their loathing and hatred for our men and women in uniform is a disgrace to this country and to the memories of those lost.
What does George P. got to do to get the respect of liberals? Maybe he can get a couple superficial wounds, write up his own purple hearts to hurry up and get out of the warzone, come home and pretend to throw "his" medals over the fence at the white house, call his fellow soldiers murderers and rapist in resemblence of Genghis Kahn... yes they'll love him then.

Tired, old stereotyping that only conservatives believe. More 'liberals' in Congress have served or had children serve in the military than 'conservatives' by the way. I am a military spouse and I voted for Obama. You must not know very many people currently in the military (usually folks that throw out this stupidity don't). If you did, you would know that the military is one of the most diverse groups of Americans under one umbrella. They do NOT all support Republicans in lock-step. You obviously didn't see the reception Obama received when he stopped by Camp Victory in Iraq last spring.

I just spent Friday night at the American Legion.... 0bama and liberals are not very popular there. I especial enjoy the Hanoi Jane targets placed in the urinals. Republicans overwhelmingly win the military vote for a reason.... they support the military. They don't say "we support the military too" and then post how the naval reserves are not real miltary.

I guess you must have missed the 2004 REPUBLICAN National Convention where fine upstanding members of the GOP wore those adorable "Purple Heart Bandaids" to mock service men and women who had been injured in battle.
I guess you missed how they lied about real military heroes, like Max Clelland, because their leaders were AWOL draft dodgers.
Conservatives only love the military when they want to send them to die - cannon fodder for their wars of profit. But let a vet come home in need, or let an active duty soldier need body armour, and conservatives are nowhere to be found.
How proud you must be. As a veteran, and a hard-core liberal, and the mother of a veteran and an active duty Marine, Please allow me to say with all sincerity: screw you.

And btw, there are "fine men and women in uniform" who don't like this war either, but are there anyway. As we all are, with taxes if not more. I voted for President Obama, and I served this country in the uniform of an Army NCO for 21 years, so I feel like I have at least a small footing from which to say this: you are a fool. You have fallen into the same trap that so many stumble into - you have mistaken the extremists for the majority.
There are a always a bitter parasitical few in the Left who denounce our military, but like those political-religious zealots who protested the funerals of our honorable fallen, those parasites no more represent the Democrats, or Liberals, than the members of the Westboro Baptist Church is filled with card carrying Republicans.
We who wore this uniform do not need you to defend us... better to be thought a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

This is beyond doubt one of the most polarizing issues of our time. To serve in the military is to put oneself in harms way, yet for the Navy and Air Force there are few casualties and fewer deaths.
George P. while admirably serving his country is just another poser in the world of politics! Do you actually think that the four-stars, who run this war are actually going to let this young
man anywhere near the front lines? Politics as usual! We will see this young man in one year, playing the political game
while thousands upon thousands of other young men and women, will be serving their fourth or fifth rounds of service in Iraq, Afghanistan and soon Iran, Syria and Lebanon.
