Top 15 Palin Book Leaks
Sara D. Davis / Getty Images
Copies of Sarah Palin's new book, Going Rogue, are already floating around newsrooms—but what are the biggest bombshells revealed so far?
1. Sarah Palin Pushed to Go After Jeremiah Wright
Palin reportedly writes that she was "told to sit down and shut up" after she brought up Barack Obama's ties to what she considered "questionable characters," most notably "Obama's pastor of 20 years, Jeremiah 'God Damn America' Wright." "I will forever question the campaign for prohibiting discussion of such association," she writes. "All the more since these telltale signs of Obama's views, carefully concealed with centrist campaign-speak, have now been brought into the light by his appointments and actions in office."
2. Steve Schmidt Cursed Around Kids
No one on the McCain team gets it worse than campaign manager Steve Schmidt, according to the early reports. Among her many grievances, Palin says Schmidt cursed around her children, telling her that vice-presidential debate moderator Gwen Ifill was "going to f--- with you." "I'm thinking," writes Palin, "Why are you telling me this? Last minute... what's the point? And no more f-bombs around Piper, please?"
3. No Levi Bashing
Although she doesn’t hold back on McCain aides Nicolle Wallace and Steve Schmidt, Palin reportedly steps gingerly around Levi Johnston, the father of her grandson. Johnston, who recently agreed to pose for Playgirl, gets no mention in the book. The Alaskan hockey player has claimed Palin is afraid to take him on because he's got dirt on her from his time with the family.
4. Her Diet Was an Issue
According to Palin, even her eating habits were a cause of concern for the McCain campaign. The Huffington Post reports that Palin writes about Steve Schmidt ordering Palin to use a staff nutritionist, telling her "You gotta get off that Atkins Diet." Palin takes a potshot back in the book, mentioning Schmidt's "rotund physique."
From a purported excerpt:
"I'm not on the Atkins Diet, Steve."
"Don't you know what a high-protein diet does?" he asked, ignoring what I had just said. He then launched into a discussion of nutrition physiology, holding forth on the importance of carbohydrates to cognitive connections and blah-blah-blah. As he lectured, I took in his rotund physique and noted that he used nicotine to keep his own cognitive connections humming along.
I interrupted his lecture. "Steve, you know what I really need? Half an hour to go for a run in these beautiful cities we're visiting. Also, seeing my kids does wonders for my soul."
• Samuel P. Jacobs: The Missing Pages in Palin’s Book 5. Palin Not Allowed to Talk to Her Favorite Reporters
Sarah Palin's interviews with Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson all but destroyed her candidacy, but the ex-VP nominee bitterly complains about being barred from talking to the press more by the campaign. According to The Wall Street Journal, aides stopped her from speaking even briefly to friendly Alaskan reporters, even if they asked questions like “How do you feel? What is it like? What’s your message to Alaskans?” Palin writes: “Not allowed...Too dangerous. The national media might pick up the interview.”
6. Shopping Spree Forced on Her
Palin reportedly takes on allegations she spent upward of $150,000 of Republican money on designer clothes by claiming the campaign made her feel like a bumpkin and all but forced her to take the new duds. "I had a humbling experience while we were back in Wasilla for the Charlie Gibson interview in September," she writes, according to the Huffington Post. "While the crews turned my kitchen into a television studio, I took [McCain aide Nicolle Wallace] into my bedroom and showed her what I thought I should pack for the trail. She flipped through my wardrobe with a raised eyebrow." "No... no... no...," she said as she slid each garment aside on its hanger," Palin writes.

Ms. Palin is a regular person and not a politician. It is obvious the McCain people were politicians who tried to work their political voodoo on her and she didn't know what to do about that. This woman came out of nowhere and people try to say she lied or she was "cunning" or that she was an idiot or whatever. The fact is she was running on instinct and those instincts didn't line up with the Washington political machine.
hfb1053
Actually, Ms Palin is a regular politician and not a real person.
speechrock
Hah! Great comeback.
spotted
And she's not a good politician, let alone a good author. The book's price at Amazon today is down to $9.00 (with free shipping) and it hasn't even been released yet.
Maybe she can get a refund from her ghost writer.
diamondgirl
I think she is both, and I hope all you lefties keep thinking all those negative things about her, it looks like it's working out great for her, so keep up the good work, as you make her a Multi Millionaire..
roadhunter
Diamondgirl: Nothing is working out great for Palin. Everything she touches or mentions turns to crap. Why else would conservatives be shunning her with such regularity, refusing to allow her to endorse campaigns for Governorships or Congressional seats?
maspring
"Ms. Palin is a regular person and not a politician."
True.
Of course she was running for POLITICAL OFFICE. That kind of job requires a POLITICIAN. A politician (person in political office) should not make the mistakes that she made.
This is why you don't want "regular people" in the white house. It's a political job. You want good politicians.
I know her supporters like the fact that she's not a politician. But you wouldn't send a "regular person" into space. You send a trained astronaut. You don't let "regular people" perform brain surgery. You look for a trained surgeon.
By refusing to acknowledge that politics is hard and takes a certain skill-set movement conservatives continue to confuse authenticity with leadership. It's the kind of mistake that put Bush in office.
Sarah Palin is completely unsuited for high public office. This is because she's not a politician. She, like her supporters, acts as if it's easy and simply a job she can walk into without the skills and discipline that it requires.

Well said, maspring.
But I will repeat that I want Sarah to run in 2012 - guaranteeing an Obama victory.

Right you are.

"She, like her supporters, acts as if it's easy and simply a job she can walk into without the skills and discipline that it requires." True.
When I watched the Daily Show's interview with the current mayor of Wasilla telling Jason Jones that it was "indubitably" true she was qualified to become vice president (even though her job is signing town checks), I figured there must be something in the Wasilla water to produce such incurious, anti-intellectual folks who think that holding national office is a 'walk in the park'.
Can one honestly imagine Palin in serious dialog over troop levels? Helping to formulate health care, immigration or energy policy with intellectuals? Heaven help us. Keep this woman away from political office. Bachmann, Blackburn, Foxx. Kyl, Inhofe and Cantor are a taste of what it means to let the loonies into D.C.

Give me a break!
I guess that is the difference between Liberals and Conservatives.
Liberals think that Politics should be a career and elected officials should only be highly trained, Ivy League educated politicians.
That is why are Government is a cesspool full of elitists who care about nothing but themselves and all that training and education has just made them more skillful at lying and cheating!
I think we have had enough "Hope and Change" It's time for some regular people to take over and bring some character, integrity, and statesmanship back to Government. We need "Dave"
johnwr3
I think the problem of the McCain/Palin marriage starts with John. Palin just wasn't his type. She didn't go rogue she's just the kind of person who isn't a shrinking violet. McCain thought it would be a great political move to have a woman on the ticket. The problem was compatibility. They had never even met before yet were thrown together in an arranged marriage sort of way. They both tried to make it work but it wasn't meant to be.
AlanD2
McCain gave up all his principles - including picking a decent vice-presidential candidate - for his last shot at the Presidency.
Between this and his age, I am profoundly grateful that he was not elected.
sippewissett
You are way too kind about what went on. McCain cynically selected Palin to (1) put a woman on the ticket as the GOP thought a token woman would steal women's votes from Hillary and (2) put a conservative Christian on the ticket to garner support that James Dodson and others were threatening to withhold from him. These aren't supposition. Both points have been written about widely. McCain deserves our wrath for his excrutiatingly bad judgment that inflicted Palin on the lower 48.
dabouv
Palin is a regular person, a regular adolescent. She is a farce. She is pretty and has nothing else going for her. She isn't especially intelligent, I doubt her IQ is more than 10 pts. above average. She has NO insight into her limitations. Didn't we have someone who wasn't too smart and not too interested in in the world once before? We now want to up the ante and find someone less curious and less prepared?
The Reps have jumped the shark on her. She is literally no different than Carrie Prejean. They both are pretty, stupid, lack insight, and are portrayed as something they are not.
We do not want a regular person as a politician. We want someone who is incredibly smart, hard working, who understands the world, who can see two sides to an issue, understands what we can and cannot do with our political and military power, understands that we need friends, and what are long term challenges are. Palin is George Bush Light.
crypto
I've read your post twice. I don't believe I would bring up IQ if I were you. It really makes no difference if she runs for the big office. If she fades into the sunset that's fine. But she got into trouble with the McCain people because she was better with the voters than he was. And she did one thing that made it all worth while. She absolutely scared the Schitt outta the democrats..Politician or not.
phoebes
crypto - you're wrong, very wrong. Sarah Palin didn't just scare the "schitt" out of Democrats, she scared the "schitt" out of every thinking person who had just lived through the Bush/Cheney administration.
As dabouv notes just above, we need someone who is everything he says in his third paragraph. Smart, curious, etc. We don't need someone who is a second-rate George Bush.
McCain should be ashamed of himself for his choice of running mate. Very ashamed.
sippewissett
crypto -- She didn't get into trouble with the McCain campaign because she was more popular than he. Palin got into trouble with the WORLD because she speaks in word-salads that betray the on-again/off-again connection between her mouth and her brain. Her intervews were ALL rambling, incoherent sound bytes so unless she stuck to her stump speech, the GOP was toast. That's what Schmidt and others were trying to hide from the American voter.
gracie99
Strike me as a bit sexist to rate Palin below George Bush. Bush had the advantage of being adopted by a cracker-jack political team who groomed him as a candidate for years in advance, of looking/sounding just like a previous president with the same name, of heaps of family money and connections, and of every advantage of birth imaginable. Palin, at least, is a hard-working, ambitious person who fought for every bit of progress she made. I doubt a Palin presidency would be any more disastrous than our long Bush nightmare.
LordAlexTrebek
To not have an intellect or wealth of experience and still desire to be the most powerful person in the world requires an enormous ego. This is what Palin and Prejean both have in common. They possess the ability to get their foot in the door with looks, and then play the blame game to no end when thing go awry. Palin's book and Prejean's freakout on the Larry King show clearly illustrate this. It takes incredible gall to run for president knowing full well you'd suck at the job, but for these nutcases nothing would be their fault. It also helps if you harbor the ultimate crutch, religion, in their cases evangelical Christianity. Oh, President Sarah made a wrong decision on troop levels and 5,000 soldiers died? It's ok, god works in mysterious ways. A quarter of Americans don't have healthcare? They should pray more, and things will work out. Unemployment skyrocketing? Don't worry everyone, Jesus is coming soon. Fortunately I do not believe Palin will amount to anything except another conservative Tweet machine with a million fake friends on Facebook. Prejean will bounce from trophy man to trophy man, milking every ounce of celebrity on the reality show circuit before her looks begin to fade, preaching the glory of god half the time and sticking it to her fellow man the rest.
roadhunter
Crypto: I agree she was better with hardline conservatives than McCain. However, as a Democrat, I can assure you she didn't scare me, or anyone I know. She made us literally laugh out loud. We began celebrating Obama's victory the day McCain announced her as his VP choice. She was the last nail in the coffin that was his campaign.
pricklypear
crypto, You got it right. The left nuts are still traumatized by the experience.

sippewissett
A regular person? G*d, I hope not. Palin is neither "regular" nor admirable, but you sure are busy trolling to defend one of the worst leader-wannabes of our time. Her "instincts" were (and remain) parochial, narrow-minded and vengeful. Her character flaws have little or nothing to do with "the Washington political machine" and everything to do with her unsuitability to be a V.P. of this complex country in a complex century.
Sajwert
The last thing on earth that anyone with a bit of intelligence would or should want is a president "just like me" as so many claim they do want.
I am reasonably intelligent. However, I am also not geared to long-term planning, I have little interest in political diplomacy, etc. Would anyone in their right mind want "someone like me" in that WH with all its complications and needs to be addressed?
Frankly, I believe that most people, give or take a bit one way or another, are just like me, and I sure as hell don't want them in the WH either.
I want someone of intelligence above mine, with all the interest and curiosity and ability to understand the little things which are important as well as the big things.
People like me generally do well with their own affairs. But, carry the world affairs? Not likely.
Palin is too much "just like me" to even warrant a moment of a thinking person's consideration for president.

Love it.
yeshe09
Careful now, she might get her lawyers to sue for calling her a hag ! love it, thx !
dooreen
I think it is really about urban verses rural there is a cultural gap, to say the least about it.
And I don't think Sarah was prepared to be a heart beat away from being president at that time of the United States.
And there are things she possibly says related to managing verses controlling people which might offend people who aren't used to that, I hate to say the word, red neck management style.
It really is shocking when you are not used to it.
It is similar to the culture that shaped the way Prejean talks, or refuses to speak, and it even shocked Larry King.
It is bad enough that such a culture is able to dominate small cities, but it doesn't work for an industrialized-military power and the majority of voters know that.
socialworklady
Doreen,
Interesting. Thanks.
clearthinker
I think you mean "slick". Palin and Prejean aren't "slick". Both of them made tactical errors by letting the media get to them. The first lesson in any political arena is to understand that media can and will win. Even when they're ratings stink and, in the case of the New York Times, going bankrupt they still don't care.
AlanD2
clearthinker: If Palin and Prejean weren't trying to con American, they wouldn't have gotten into trouble with the MSM.
sippewissett
..."Let the media get to them"? How precisely do you expect a politician to do his/her job without reaching out to and managing the media? One manages the media with carefully thought-out ideas, positions, platforms, etc., not with word-salads that keep comedians in business for months.

Palin's biggest problem is national political reality. This reality is her enemy, actually.
ImNoPUNK
If Sarah Palin's critics saw her walking on the Potomac they would say it was because she couldn't swim.
magoo363
Actually Sarah's critics would say it was iced over because they would recognize the fact that she was walking on frozen water, the only way she could walk on the Potomac. Sarah's critics deal in facts while Sarah's supporters deal in feelings.
ImNoPUNK
Hey magoo.......you folks are soooo predictable. ...

"If Sarah Palin's critics saw her walking on the Potomac they would say it was because she couldn't swim."
Not true.
Since water is the medium of holy baptism, it was once believed that it would reject an agent of the Devil: witches would float.
If I saw Sarah Palin walking on water I would conclude that she was an agent of Satan and should be burned at the stake.

Which brings us to the real reason, the McCain campaign didn' t want to bring up Rev Wright. The minster that blessed palin's run for governor bragged about chasing witches from villages. So no doubt questions about Palin's preference would arise. Would she advocate burning or drowning witches.
roadhunter
She turned me into a newt!
yeshe09
They would suggest she was floating on hot air !

Well at least now we will all learn that the McCain loss was not because of Sarah but because he didn't allow Sarah run the campaign her way ...to go rogue.
So far all we have seen is Sarah, Queen of the Tundra making excuses and pointing fingers.
I'm sure that the MSM is just focusing on the negative but, when the book is actually released, we will be given an opportunity to really explore the depths of her thinking about the substantive issues facing the nation like shifts in worldwide standard of living equilibrium due to globalization of trade, dislocation of jobs resulting from technology progression, the impacts on military strategy of over population and extreme poverty in 3rd and 4th world countries, strategies for reducing illegal immigration, the nation's near-term and long-term strategy for alternative transportation fuels in relation to world-wide demand for liquid hydrocarbons, the economic ramifications of the lack of maintenance for the nation's transportation infrastructure, the rising cost of heath care in relation to GDP and productivity.
I could go on but you get the picture. When are we going to get a glimpse of how Sarah Palin, the would-be president, actually thinks and how will she relate to the leadership of our allies and our enemies?
That is the real substance of her book that I'm sure the MSM has overlooked so far.

So who was running for VP? Palin or all of the aides that she claims ran, and ruined, her life? It seems to me that when an aide says you can talk to this person and not that person and here is what you can study and what you can't or this is what you can wear and what you can't...at that point the candidate needs to step up and remind them who they are working for, and then do what she feels is right. I don't see how it would have worked out any worse for Palin if she had done that.
What this excerpt tells me is that Palin couldn't tell bad advice from good (until it blows up in her face) and didn't have the cojones to run her own staff.
crymeariver
You are correct, the aides are the worker bees not the leaders. Palin is simply trying to re-write history. McCain aides (including Nicolle Wallace) have refuted all her claims:
"Not a single thing quoted under my name is anything I ever said, or would say in a million years"
-Nicolle Wallace
http://www.cnn.com/video/
DakLak
Palin is a latter day Anita Bryant: awkward, unthinkingly reiterating the same mantra. To prove she has no coherent thought process she had hire a ghost writer who also got things wrong.
To prove her ineptness for office Palin proclaimed: "Hey everyone Look out the Kitchen window what do we all see Russia." Unfortunately no one else could.
ImNoPUNK
Hey DakLak.... get your facts right..especially when you try and paraphrase ... Fact is, it was Tina Fey not Palin, who coined seeing Russia from her porch.
AlanD2
True, ImNoPUNK, but it nicely encapsulates Sarah Palin in spirit, if not in fact.
sippewissett
We KNOW Tina Fey made that statement. We get it and don't need your fact-checking. You Palin acolytes fail to recognize that we repeat Fey's humor because Palin made a STUPID statement about Russia that failed to pass the sniff test in bolstering her puny "foreign affairs credentials", which is why in turn Fey made hay of that shortcoming. Palin is a half-wit; Fey is a wit.
Winski
Even given just this snippet..Palin is now permanently enshrined in the temple of the TRULY STUPID.
crypto
I put this on another post. But it's worth doing again. If the 2010 elections allow Pelosi and her cronies to stay aboard the 2012 elections won't matter. Obama plans to do a Chavez, and do away with term limits for the president of the United States. Go ahead, laugh and tell me how crazy I am. Just be real quiet and watch. Give it the benefit of the doubt though. Then tell me what is to prevent him from doing so. Nothing has stopped him so far from doing anything he wants.
phoebes
Uh, crypto, we are NOT a banana republic here. Obama CANNOT "do away with term limits" because the US constitution mandates a two-term limit. Just as the constitution had to be amended by Congress and a majority of the states to enact a "two term limit", the same process would have to be repeated by the same parties to do away with tern limitations.
Is there anything Obama has done since he took office that you either like or approve of? Even Bush-haters can point to a few things he and his administration did or said we liked. But it seems as if Obama-haters can't find anything to approve of, nothing...
ImNoPUNK
Hey phoebes...For the record... I don't hate Obama; I never have ..... I just see him for what he is.... "a south side, slack jawed, long legged, mack daddy".... He's no different than any politician found on his side of the Chicago River.
AlanD2
ImNoPUNK: If you don't hate Obama, why did you add the nasty comments at the end of your post?
As far as I can tell, you're just another lying conservative troll.
crypto
I do believe that he is the very best speaker of any president. That may be a small part of the problem..He gets going and promises things he doesnn't deliver. Yes he can do away with term limits, with congress's cooperation. There are already too many "borderline" constitution skirtings in the mill. You tell me what he has accomplished that is beneficial to the nation. Bail outs,? have you read this cap and trade,? stimulus bill? Bush Hater?? I didn't vote for Bush and I did for Obama...Hell we got screwed both times.
Willow207
Proof of your claims?
Or just more "fictional" writing from the right?
stjam8
The GOP has slowed the progress of bills 87 times. The GOP has stalled the President's team from being put in place. The bill extending unemployment benefits was stalled for 5 weeks before every republican voted for it. This way the GOP can slow any progress toward change that this President promised, and later tell their constituants that they voted for the unemployment benefits. This President desire to have a bi-partisan health care reform has delayed the bill for months. The facts dispute any reason you have to fear of government takeover.
sippewissett
Paranoia has no limits. You should take your meds. "Nothing has stopped him so far from doing anything he wants." What planet are you from?
Have both wars in the Middle East ended? Are our troops home? Has health care reform with a single payer passed already? Is immigration reform complete? Is the economy okay again? These are all goals Obama "wants", but he can't turn around in less than one year worldwide economic and foreign catastrophes that were 8 years in the making.
crypto
Well Let's see. He said" Our troops are coming home from Iraq. But Afganistan is a war of necessity that we must win" Now he won't listen to the people fighting it. If you would get a copy of the heallth care bill(that Pelosi forced) and read it through, you will take your meds. And for God's sake read the cap and trade, that bill kills every home owner and potential home owner financially. Immigration won't ever be complete. The more he puts on the rolls, the more will take their place. Is the economy OK again?? As long as this administration allows the congress to make all the decisions it will never be ok. Pelosi, Dodd, Franks, Rengal, these people are just plain crooks. Senate: Harry Reid. how's that high speed train between Pelosi and Reid working for ya. Man this goes on and on. Finally
J O B S !!! You can't borrow and spend your way out of debt. Without those jobs he promised there's not gonna be revenue to move this economy. And if this end of year holiday shopping season goes the way predicted next year will begin the worst yet. Yeh, He's doing a great job, for the people in government. They have good jobs and health insurance they don't even have to pay for.

No. Conservative groups are buying up this book to give away copies.

I have a suggestion regarding that:
Go to a Barnes & Noble or other big retailer.
Pick up one of Palin's books and find a chair.
Skim the book in about 20 minutes--it's only 5 chapters.
Put the book back on the display.
Go home.
Don't let the Demagogue Bimbo make money off of you.

It seems to me that if their was any substance to Palin she would use this opportunity to come up with some thoughtful solutions on the world, our place in the world and what she would do as President. Instead it appears that she is complaining and name-calling an re-hashing last year's campaign. I think it would have been really cool if she had come up with some great policy talk and surprised me, but alas she did not. I am still waiting.
stjam8
Well, according to Rush, it is the most comprehensive book on policy he has ever read. lol
