Palin's Gold Mine

BS Top - McDonald Palin Gold Mine Bill Pugliano / Getty Images Sarah Palin sold 300,000 copies of Going Rogue on its first day of sale, Duff McDonald has learned. More details on the media rollout that's doubled as a $25.6 million economic stimulus package.

Did you hear that Sarah Palin has a book out? Of course you did. Her memoir, Going Rogue, has been the talk of the nation this week. Love her or hate her, the ex-governor of Alaska has once again sucked all the air out of the room of our national conversation. We’ve spent another week transfixed by her idiosyncratic brand of political psychobabble, her petty grievances, and the challenges faced by an “average American” like herself.

While her followers may buy the whole “average” shtick she’s selling, there’s one thing about the lady that is decidedly elite: her earning power. In July, we estimated that in resigning, Palin had lined herself up for a payday between $17 million and $20.75 million over the next 12 months. With Going Rogue crushing the bestseller lists, she’s well on her way.

“Sales are phenomenal, and we are convinced that the book will continue to sell phenomenally for some time to come,” says a HarperCollins insider.

And what of the media that can’t seem to look away? While left-of-center commentators will mock her as ardently as right-of-center supporters gush over her, they’re both making money right alongside her by covering the spectacle that is Sarah. How much? We set out to put a value on a single week of Palinmania—not only to Palin herself, but to everyone else riding on her gravy train.

THE BOOK
Going Rogue is going gangbusters, and it looks like both Palin and her publisher, HarperCollins, are going to make some serious money off of it. According to industry insiders, Palin got a $7 million advance for her book. She’s earning a royalty rate of 15 percent, which means she makes $4.35 per book sold, and therefore needs to sell 1.6 million books to earn out her advance. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that HarperCollins had printed another 100,000 copies of Going Rogue, bringing the total in print to 1.6 million. Palin would need to sell all of those to earn out her advance, so it’s unlikely that’s going to happen.

Michelle Goldberg: Palins’ Ego Trip

Tina Brown: Sarah Drops the Act
But HarperCollins will be making money long before that. There’s a rule of thumb in the industry that publishers net about $10 per hardcover sold, after expenses, but before the cost of the advance. Once she’s sold 700,000 copies, then, HarperCollins is in the black. And what of that 1.6 million printed? An ideal “sell-through” rate is about 75 percent, which means HarperCollins thinks it’s going to sell about 1.2 million copies. At that level, Palin will have made $7 million and HarperCollins $5 million of its own.

More Daily Beast contributors on Palin’s book tour A HarperCollins insider told The Daily Beast that the book sold a staggering 300,000 copies on the first day alone, which was Tuesday. “Sales are phenomenal, and we are convinced that the book will continue to sell phenomenally for some time to come,” says the insider. They’re not prevaricating: As of 2:30 p.m. today, the book was No. 1 on Amazon, ahead of both Stephen King’s new novel, Under the Dome, and Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol. The latter sold 1 million copies on its first day, but that figure included the U.K., and top fiction generally trumps nonfiction. Any way you carve it, Going Rogue looks to be a $12 million goldmine.

THE TALKING HEADS
Palin made the media rounds this week as she was out humping her book. Check her Facebook page, and you’ll see her report on “a great conversation” with Rush Limbaugh, “a great conversation” with Barbara Walters, and… wait for it… “a great conversation” with Oprah Winfrey. As for Sean Hannity of Fox News? He’s a cut above. Palin reports that he’s “a great American.”

So what was she worth to the news business this week? Let’s break it down. The Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism estimated 2008 news revenue for NBC, ABC, and CBS at $800 million, $700 million, and $500 million, respectively. Similarly, Journalism.org estimated 2008 cable news revenue at Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC at $567 million, $556 million, and $173 million, respectively.

Because Fox News was practically slobbering over the woman 24/7, we’ll give her credit for a full half day’s worth of revenue, or $800,000. Add all the other ones up—from ABC to CNN—and you get $7.5 million in daily revenue. Palin got tons of coverage, but not an across-the-board half day’s worth, so we’ll give her 10 percent of the daily total, or $750,000. That’s a total of $1.55 million.

Of course, she was of particular value to both Oprah Winfrey and Good Morning America (interviewed by Barbara Walters, no less!) this week. Oprah averages 6.8 million viewers to GMA’s 4.1 million, for a total of 10.9 million. According to The New York Times, Palin’s appearance was Oprah’s best in two years, reeling in 8.7 million viewers. Apply the same premium to GMA, ad you get 5.2 million coffee-drinking gawkers at the absurdity that is Sarah Palin. We’ll give her $2.5 million for her troubles.

The blogosphere was also afire with Palinmania, from Andrew Sullivan to Talking Points Memo to this very site. It’s harder to put a number on it, but we’ll give her a half million, or $500,000 worth of credit. All-in, she was worth $4.55 million to the media.

You guys just have to get over it. You just HATE her. Do you realize that that alone is enough to give her an additonal 10 percent of the vote IF she were ever to run for President? Does it occur to you that she isnt all that stupid and that a lot of us would take a woman with street smarts over an Ivy leaguer who never misspoke but was bought and paid for by someone or another? By now most of us have figured out that Wall Street paid for Obamas election and has him in their pocket. Hilary had her insiders pushin her. I'd trust Sarah with my life before any of the front runner insiders likely to run for President next round. If she makes a millions of bucks between now and then, you wont be able to say she billed the campaign for too may expensive clothes! Run Sarah, run!

Such astute original observations. I'm not sure how to say that their are a lot of voters who would never pull their lever for her, but they fantasize about being inside her (mind). The trouble is they can't be sure she'd stick around to finish the job which makes any choice of running mate critical.

She's a great brand for marketing purposes. Of course, that only works as long as she plays the role of a future candidate. Unfortunately, her popularity is indicative of the great vacuum of potentially viable right-side candidates. As soon as a serious candidate surfaces her brand will fade (kind of like that other right-nut sweetheart Carrie Prejean). There are those who would argue otherwise, but a good portion of her ratings come from people waiting for the next train wreck.

It's difficult to see her on the radio. It's a full-time, long-term commitment and she's shown she's more of a fast money girl.

What exactly was it in Obama's great background that told you he was going to be.... whatever he is? In the state leglislature he was repeatedly changing his vote. He'd vote and then he'd correct it. Then two years in the Senate voting present over 90 percent of the time. Gosh that's some heavy experience there! Yup, you really hold em to the fire on that experience thing don't you? Hypocrite.

Same experience as Lincoln had and I think he did a pretty good job. Either way, the experience question is now moot as President Obama is now our president.

Also, if you bothered to read Obama's books, he is a quick study. He makes mistakes, but he admits it and learns from it.

Lying again, ThinkAgain?

Obama had about 4,000 votes during his years in the Illinois state Senate. Of these, he voted "present" about 130 times. That's a little over 3% according to my calculator.

Why do you post such easily refuted lies here, ThinkAgain? Do you think nobody can use Google?

There are Communist (How many people lost their lives to Castro, the former Soviet Union), Marxists, Socialist, Acorn, SEIU, MAO lovers (Mao murdered over 60 million people, he is worse than Hitler), Czars saying how wonderful Chavez is. My God, look at this man. He is destroying this country.

As for clearthinker, she is vapid; she couldn't even get through community college in four years. She is a talking points machine that offers nothing to the public discourse. And Reagan wasn't terribly bright either (see: Reaganomics) but he was cunning (see: Iran-Contra Affair). There's a difference.

We're not scared. We're glad for the GOP and hope she'll be around for awhile.

And it's spelled "You're" scared, not "your scared", " Reagan", not "Regan"

Good luck with that!

He we in the State of NJ are empowered, we kicked out of a State that is Hard Core Democrat, the Socialist in Charge Corzine. He taxed and spent every penny he could get his hands on. He grew government jobs and union wages and jobs. He is Obama's Example of perfection, look how that worked out for him... Obama and his left leaning cronies are next to go, 2010 will be eye opening for the Democrats who vote for this tax and spend Health Care Bill and every other bill they have passed that cost the tax payers more than they have in this time of recession. I am sure Palin will be right there with all conservatives to vote out anyone who needs to go!

I don't know about DG, maybe it's the fact that she can't reach into her computer and slap some sense into all of you Liberals that has her so flustered and frustrated!

What is the end game for all of this Socialistic Government Policy? I know what the vision of people with a modicum of common sense think these policies will mean as there is evidence all over the country.

Double digit unemployment, Runaway inflation, huge taxes for everyone, this includes people not making 200,000 a year but, everyone who pays taxes. Health Care Rationing, Health Care Costs still going up even if Health Care Reform is passed. No economic growth, etc...

If anything in the list is not true, I would be glad to hear it. And please don't use the latest GDP as evidence of growth when the Government paid for that with cash for clunkers, injecting 4 billion into the economy in a one time shot. I guarantee, next quarter's numbers won't be so forgiving. judging by the continuing unemployment numbers at 10.2 percent.

At the end of the day, what will society look like? How are your policies making it better for Americans to live?

Please, one of you all knowing Liberals answer this question.

Maybe you could be persuasive and spread some of your enlightenment instead of leading everyone who doesn't agree with you to want to kick your Sanctimonious Elitist asses.

Diamondgirl- Alaskans own the resources in their state, they share in the profits equally, every man, woman and child, from the sale of gas, copper, oil, etc. It has nothing to do with a tax rebate. It is socialism pure and simple. It is a deal they cut with the Federal Gov't a long time ago. Educate yourself on this before you run your mouth about yet another issue you obviously know zero about

|
5:09 pm, Nov 20, 2009

cb, As always you think you know everything, below is the web site that tells you that Alaskans do pay certain taxes, Federal income Tax, and Real Estate taxes. They dont pay State Tax or Sales Tax. Their tax rate is very high you can read it for yourself! So If I was getting money back from my State, which I did before Corzine cut it, it was from my Real Estate Taxes for that year, never State Taxes. Same as in Alaska.

Such predictable drivel about 'street smarts' vs. 'Ivy League', as if being intelligent and informed is a crime and being an idiot is something to be praised as somehow more American...I suppose that sort of talk makes some people feel better about themselves but it doesn't address the actual issues.

Her book is full of lies and fallacies; she quit her job as Governor of Alaska for no particular reason; her dysfunctional family is daily tabloid fare. She is a wreck, but right now a profitable one for some, and she will continue to drivel and froth as long as there's money to be made.

Trust Sarah with your life? Good luck with that. I wouldn't trust her to push the button on a street light.

Yes, people are afraid of her - afraid she'll get anywhere near the Oval Office. Personally, I'm very offended by her lack of serious or intelligent comments. How do you know when a Conservative is on target?

When the Left goes NUTS denouncing them with every breath. You wanna know who the Left is worried about? Look at who they are attacking the most.

During the Primaries, was the Left afraid of John McCain? No, they loved him until he got the nomination. Romney was the one they went after. Why? - they knew he could beat Obama on substance alone.

Step back and look at this. According to the Left and the MSM, Sarah Palin is a complete imbecile. An idiot of the highest degree. And yet for years she was the most popular Governor in America, rising to that height shortly after just being a stay-at-home mom. Then she became the nominee for VP of the United States and immediately sent McCain's numbers up by 10 points.

Now she has written a HUGE bestseller and will make MILLIONS. Thousands of people are attending just her book-signings.

I must say, not bad for an imbecile. Not bad for a person with more experience governing than our 'genius' president.

THE LEFT JUST DOESN'T GET IT. LET ME LAY THIS OUT FOR YOU:

1. FoxNews has more viewers every night than MSNBC and CNN put together.
2. Conservative Non-fiction utterly dominates the NYTimes Bestseller List.
3. Conservative Radio is HUGE whereas every attempt Liberals have made at radio have to rely on 'contributions' and 'government assistance' because no one will by ad space. You see, advertisers will only pay for space on radio people actually listen to.
4. Gallup (a left-leaning pollster), claims that a mere 20% of Americans consider themselves to be 'Liberal'. 40% of Americans claim the 'Conservative' mantle.
5. Despite having the WH and overpowering majorities in the House and Senate, every single left-leaning piece of legislation is either stalled (Obamacare) or outright DOE (Cap n' Trade).
6. Obama's Approval Ratings have fallen below 50%.
7. In recent mid-term elections, Independents, which used to vote 2/3 Democrat went 2:1 Republican. This alone should scare you silly.

I could go on for pages. The evidence is clear. It is NOT that you are not 'packaging' you socialistic agenda the right way or that Obama isn't being forceful enough or using the right 'magic' words.

The problem (for the Left) is that America KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE OFFERING AND WE SIMPLY DO NOT WANT IT. Occam's Razor (look it up).

P.S., If the Left truly believes that America wants what they are selling, just force through Obamacare and wait for 2010. You thought the 2009 off-year elections were bad, get ready for an epic blowout that will make 1994 look like a slap-fight by comparison.

'Spin'? Really? Which part of what I said is not a well-known fact?

First of all, Duff, the only reason I am even "reading" your blog is because it is on Sarah. So I guess you are cashing in on her appeal as well since I am sure your readership will swell since your topic is great. Of course, like the rest of the liberal media, you really don't get the story straight because you don't really "get" someone like Sarah Palin.
As for "liars" - precisely how many jobs is Obama saying he created in districts that don't exist? And "how much" more money is he going to give to ACORN to fund child prostitution and other worthwhile small businesses. Good grief. Most Palin supporters I know, including myself, have multiple college degrees. The only way liberals get votes is to register inner city crack addicts by ACORN and bus them into the precincts. Get ready liberals - America is about to SWING to the RIGHT. Don't get whiplash - lefties! 2012 will be the year people vote for TRUE change which is everything that Obama does not stand for!

Correction: palin has one degree, not "multiple college degrees." Just fact-checking the palin zombies here.

dangimtryin

The zombie didn't say Palin has multiple degrees-but that Palin supporters do. I'd consider it a favor if one of those supporters could perhaps take Palin's place then.

she's up 7points since Oprah! of couse, that brings her "up" to within 3 points of Obama's low Obama 46 Palin 43

as for the radio comment, she was on with Rush, was terrific, on with Laura Ingraham today, donated her jacket from the cover with the flag pin to Laura for Fisher House Charity, Laura hopes for 6 figures. On with Dennis Miller on Friday.

Nice try, take two polls asking two different questions and claim they are the same. Over 65% of Americans polled say that Palin is NOT QUALIFIED to be President. In a poll with her, Hillary, and Biden as to who Americans would vote for president: Hillary came first, then Biden, then Palin but with EXTREMELY low marks. However, I do hope you encourage her to run in 2012.

I find it very suspicious that Palin has not been on CNN or MSNBC. I wonder what she's afraid of?

Fox complained, the views didn't. Matter of fact if Obama is on Fox I'll watch "anything else"

as far as Sarah not being on the other stations: she is selling books, why bother, nobody is watching those other stations.

tolatetocry: I agree that most Fox News watchers won't want to watch an Obama interview. This is an excellent reason for Obama to skip Fox altogether.

Oh really......afraid? Those 2 channels do not deserve her appearance. I can just see Olbermann and Matthews hissing like a couple of rattlesnakes should she ever decide to favor them with an interview ----I hope never. Then again, there's always the ever slick Rich Sanchez on CNN who believes he is the media darling of the moment, wait there's always Larry King Still Alive panting for a sit down now that we're finished with Michael Jackson's family. No wonder they'll scratching around the bottom hoping to catch Fox News. Drives ya crazy doesn't it? Deal with it along with the media and this guy Duff. The venom just drips from you people.
