A Women in the World discussion about empowering girls in the developing world, featuring Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, and moderated by Katie Couric. Watch the live-stream online Saturday, March 13 at 2:45 p.m. at thedailybeast.com.
Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, a UNICEF advocate and expert on the challenges facing girls in the developing world, will join CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric to discuss the urgent need to keep girls in school and help them avoid early marriage and HIV-infection.
Joining Queen Rania and Couric will be Kathy Bushkin Calvin, CEO of summit co-host the United Nations Foundation, which does innovative work in Africa by offering parents financial incentives to keep their teen daughters in school. Helen Amdemikael, a United Nations representative in Ethiopia, will discuss related efforts there to fight the poverty and traditional mores that hold girls back. We’ll also hear from NPR personalities Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, whose radio show, The Kitchen Sisters, reports on the secret lives of girls around the world.
Rounding out the panel will be two inspiring young women who’ve had to fight for their own right to an education: Kakenya Ntaiya is a young Kenyan villager who was engaged at age 5 but resisted that arranged marriage in her teens, traveling to the UK to attend college and then returning to her home country to launch a network of learning centers for her peers. Donnady is a girl’s rights advocate from the Philippines, who hopes to someday become a nurse.
