Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump weighed in Friday on Kentucky clerk Kim Davis’s refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. Davis is spending Labor Day weekend in jail insisting that any licenses issued in her absence are void and “not worth the paper they are written on” because she didn’t approve them. Her attorney, meanwhile, is comparing her homophobic plight to Martin Luther King Jr., after he was jailed in Birmingham, Alabama for participating in a nonviolent civil rights protest against racism and segregation.Trump gave his take on the “very, very sticky situation” to MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough on Morning Joe, saying he’s a “believer on both sides of the picture.” He narrowed the options down to two: Davis can let her deputy clerks issue the licenses (which he noted she’s already refused) or gay couples could travel somewhere else. “They have many other places where you get licensed, and you have them actually, quite nearby,” he said.“I hate to see her being put in jail,” Trump added. “I understand what they’re doing. It would be certainly nice if she didn’t do it, but other people in her office do it. But from what I understand, she won’t allow other people in her office to do it.”Asked if clerks across America should issue licenses to same-sex couples, Trump said, “You have to go with it. The decision has been made, and that is the law of the land.”“She can take a pass and let somebody else in the office do it in terms of religious,” he concluded. “So you know, it’s a very tough situation. But…we’re a nation of laws.”
