John Chamberlain’s “Miss Lucy Pink,” a sculpture from 1962 that’s now in the Chamberlain retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Chamberlain didn’t work only with the crushed cars that made and kept him famous. In the late 1960s, he actually took a seven-year break from bumpers and fenders to work in materials as varied as hard plastic and foam rubber. But what this show proves is that, even at his most automotive, Chamberlain achieved a surprising range of effects and meanings. Here, the masculine world of steel and chrome is forced into contact with the pink of boudoirs; the violence of a car crash is made to stand on point.
