Get ready to dive back into a world of glitz, glamour, and jaw-dropping wealth: a Crazy Rich Asians TV series is officially in the works at Max.
On Feb. 28, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Kevin Kwan’s bestselling trilogy, which chronicles the lives of Singapore’s ultra-wealthy elite, will be adapted into a new series. Jon M. Chu, director of the 2018 film, and Adele Lim, its co-writer, are both returning to bring this lavish world to life once again.
After the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians grossed $240 million globally, a sequel was quickly put into the works. However, after some creative differences coupled with the project being stuck in development limbo, both Chu and Lim departed from the project.
Now, the franchise is making a triumphant return as a TV series, with Lim stepping in as showrunner and executive producer. She will be joined by Chu, Kwan, Nina Jacobson, and Brad Simpson, who will all serve as executive producers.
As the show is still in the early stages of development, there is no news yet about whether the film’s original cast members including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, or Awkwafina have signed on for the TV adaptation.
As for whether fans of 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians are happy about getting a TV show over a film sequel, the reactions appear to be mixed.
