‘Wicked’ Fans Are Sure Trailer is Teasing a Secret Storyline

GELPHIES

“Okay, now kiss.”

“You’re the only friend I ever had,” Elphaba says as she leans in to kiss Glinda in the Wicked: For Good trailer.

Just kidding, that scene’s still only for the fanfics. But judging by the reaction to the trailer, fans are dreaming about it more than ever.

Universal Pictures just dropped the first trailer for part two of its Wicked saga, with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande back as the magical duo Elphaba and Glinda. The film will follow Elphaba as she continues to fight against the Wizard’s cruel reign over Oz, despite the ruler declaring her an enemy of the state.

And while there were a lot of moments from the trailer to fangirl over—Glinda’s pink gown, the vocals on “For Good,” the cute CGI lion—what captured the internet’s attention the most was all the Gelphie (Glinda and Elphaba’s ship name) scenes.

First, there was a snippet of the two witches sitting on a broom together, gazing at the sparkling pink night sky. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic date.

Then, people caught a glimpse of the two holding hands.

Next, there is a moment when Elphaba leans close to Glinda’s face, making Gelphie shippers believe the characters “wanna kiss so bad.”

One fan posted the clip to X, writing the caption: “Happy Pride month, Specifically to Glinda not being able to stop herself from staring at Elphaba’s lips.”

The shipping has gotten so intense that some fans are starting to confidently declare that Elphaba and Glinda will be a couple in the second film.

“Guys, my sixth lesbian sense is SCREAMING that Glinda will EXPLICITLY acknowledge her romantic feeling towards Elphaba in Wicked: For Good,” one person wrote on X.

Then, they told their followers to “watch this space” for future exciting updates.

Some people are even editing fake moments into the trailer, replacing the words, “Our Wizard Lies,” that Elphaba drew in the sky with, “Glinda will you marry me?”

For those unfamiliar with the Wicked fandom, the Elphaba and Glinda shipping may seem out of place. After all (spoiler alert), Elphaba ends up with Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). She already has a love interest.

However, what you may not realize is that the Gelphies have been around since the musical first premiered on Broadway in 2003. That’s more than two decades of people wishing the two witches would just get together.

In an interview with the Gay Times, Grande acknowledged the long history of shipping the two woman, even agreeing that “Glinda might be a little in the closet.”

Marissa Bode, the actress who plays Nessarose Thropp, Elphaba’s sister in the film, shared a sentiment similar to Grande’s in her interview with Into.

“The straights are gonna get mad at me for saying this,” she said. “But canonically, for me, everybody in the cast, character-wise, is queer in my brain. Like, Elphaba and Galinda were a little too suspicious for me personally. In my brain, there is fruitiness happening there. That’s my personal opinion.”

The Gelphies are vindicated.
