April Ludgate, ‘Parks and Recreation’

As the surly intern turned assistant on Parks and Recreation, April Ludgate (Aubrey Plaza) hates her job almost as much as her boss Ron Swanson does. While she may act apathetic about her administrative tasks, her dedication to keeping her perpetually unhappy boss happy—trying to schedule all of his meetings on a day she doesn’t think actually exists, for example—is admirable.

Jonathan, ‘30 Rock’

Just like 30 Rock’s Kenneth the Page, Jonathan (Maulik Pancholy) had an obsessive devotion to and potential romantic feelings for his boss, Jack Donaghy, that was infectious. So watching him get abruptly fired in order to prove a point to nemesis Liz Lemon was heartbreaking.

Kitty Sanchez, ‘Arrested Development’

Kitty Sanchez (Judy Greer) was more than George Bluth’s loyal assistant on Arrested Development. Much to the rest of the Bluth family’s dismay, she was also his closest confidante. Kitty used her blackmail-worthy knowledge to continue working for the Bluth Company, despite her preference for flashing over filing.

Mrs. Landingham, ‘The West Wing’

Known as an idealistic, devoted, and motherly mentor for President Bartlet and his staff, presidential secretary Mrs. Landingham (Kathryn Joosten) was so beloved on The West Wing that her—spoiler alert—shocking Season 2 death was even mourned with a moment of silence in the California State Assembly.

Miss Blankenship, ‘Mad Men’

Don Draper’s desk has been manned by many young ladies from the Sterling Cooper secretarial pool, including Peggy and the lawn mower-riding Lois, but Miss Blankenship (Randee Heller) was a much-needed hire for Don. While she was known as the “Queen of Perversions” in her younger years, Miss Blankenship was unintentionally but amusingly cantankerous until her final breath behind her desk.

Lucy Moran, ‘Twin Peaks’

Twin Peaks’ Lucy Moran (Kimmy Robertson) is the epitome of the kooky yet sweet receptionist. From meticulously arranging doughnuts for sheriff’s department meetings to transcribing conversations she wasn’t supposed to hear, Lucy perfectly fit into the world of Twin Peaks and even had a secret of her own.

Beth, ‘NewsRadio’

With her bright red hair, eccentric fashion choices, and sharp wit, Beth with-no-last-name from NewsRadio, played by Vicki Lewis, was one of the sassiest secretaries on TV in the ‘90s. One of her most endearing qualities was her tendency to spout unique yet amusing opinions, including her tirade on the differences between being cute and pretty.

Pam Beesly, ‘The Office’

Pam Beesly and her portrayer, Jenna Fischer, broke the mold of television receptionists for daring to be boring. In the early seasons of The Office, Pam’s mild demeanor and quiet disdain for her job made her one of TV’s most relatable receptionist characters.

Miss Jane, ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’

While she didn’t often agree with her greedy boss, Miss Jane (Nancy Kulp) from The Beverly Hillbillies was a loyal yet scheming secretary for Mr. Drysdale. Miss Jane also had a close relationship with the Clampetts, who considered her part of the family on the show.
