This wall sculpture by the Philadelphia artist Bill Walton is in a show shared between the JTT and James Fuentes galleries on New York’s Lower East Side. This and other works by Walton fit perfectly in today’s most current trend, as seen in the current Whitney Biennial and New Museum Triennial: They take the most unassuming of everyday objects and turn them into modest, cryptic sculpture. The movement’s not about finding beauty in the everyday, so much as insisting that everyday banality can be its own reward. And here’s where Walton’s contribution to the movement comes as a surprise: He died in 2010, when he was 79, and had been making his “trendy” art for many years before.
