Pay attention Will, Kate and Harry: this is what being a modern royal is all about.
Princess Sofia of Sweden—the gorgeous, gap-toothed, former topless model who wed the extremely handsome Prince Carl Philip in June this year—has proved she is the epitome of modern royalty by announcing her pregnancy on Facebook, writing, “We are so happy and excited to announce that we are expecting our first child. We are very much looking forward to it.”
The post soon amassed over 65,000 ‘likes.’
Carl-Philip, 36, is the second child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.
However, it is his elder sister, Crown Princess Victoria (who married her former personal trainer, Daniel Wesling) who will inherit the throne, thanks to the country’s non-sexist succession laws.
The Facebook posting is of a part with the Swedish royal family’s consistent efforts to be among the most forward-looking of European nobles.
In Stockholm, it is not unusual to see Victoria and her husband whizzing past on their bikes.
You can often see senior members of the royal family—even Carl Gustav XVI, aged 69, and his wife, Queen Silvia—in the city’s restaurants and theatres.
But still, the announcement in 2014 that Prince Carl Philip was to actually go ahead and marry a former glamour model and reality TV starlet caused a certain amount of disbelief, even among the liberal Swedes—especially when it then was revealed that she told an interviewer she had ‘made out’ with Jenna Jameson after meeting the porn star at a party in LA.
She also appeared in a moderately saucy reality TV show (in one scene on the show, “Paradise Island”, Sofia was filmed topless receiving a back and butt massage).
When asked in 2013 about her colorful past the bride-to-be told Swedish broadcaster TV3: “I wouldn’t have made the same choices today. That’s for sure. But I have a hard time saying that I regret anything in my life.”
“It’s always fun to have royal children, and in contrast to all the other news, this is good news,” Sten Hedman, a frequent media commentator on the Swedish royal family, The Local, reports.
“They married last summer and they are not very young. They have both passed 30 and may want to have two or three children. So it is better to be fast at the start.”
