First-Time Celeb Moms

A lot has changed in the world since last Mother’s Day. Obama endorsed gay marriage, America finally pulled its last soldiers out of Iraq—and with just as much fanfare, Beyoncé gave birth to baby Blue Ivy. From Jessica Simpson to January Jones, see our list of 12 of the past year’s most glamorous first-time moms.

Charlize Theron

Prometheus star Charlize Theron surprised the world in March when she announced that she’d adopted a baby boy from South Africa. Photos of the little boy, who Theron named Jackson, recently surfaced when paparazzi caught the actress with him in her arms at LAX. Theron spoke about her decision to start a family in Vogue UK, saying, “I’ve always been very honest in saying I wanted a family. I’ve always known I wanted a family,” she said, before joking, “I don’t think my mom could wait anymore!”

Beyoncé Knowles

The media anticipation in the weeks before Beyoncé gave birth to Blue Ivy Carter in January probably was tantamount to what America felt in the hours before man first walked on the moon. To attempt to counter the inevitable frenzy that their daughter’s birth would incite, Beyoncé and papa Jay-Z allegedly took over the entire sixth floor of New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital (though there are conflicting accounts of this story). Whatever the case, photos that Jay-Z has since posted on his website show a happy family.

Susan Downey

The Avengers star Robert Downey Jr. may have a new, very tiny sidekick. Susan Downey, Robert’s wife of seven years, had her first child, named Exton, with the actor in February. The Iron Man actor proudly shared pictures of his 3-month-old and Susan during an appearance on The Tonight Show last week but expressed reservations about being a real-life “hero” to the boy when he gets older: “Do I want to be a hero to my son? No,” he told Esquire. “I would like to be a very real human being. That’s hard enough.”

Jessica Simpson

It was the pregnancy that seemed to go on for a hundred years—but earlier this month, Jessica Simpson’s baby girl, named Maxwell Drew Johnson, finally arrived. Maxwell is the singer’s first child with fiancé Eric Johnson, and, according to her Twitter, things are going well so far. “I am so in love with baby Maxwell,” she wrote. “I want to cry every time I look at her. Motherhood is by far the best thing I’ve ever experienced.”

Hilary Duff

Lizzie McGuire is definitely all grown up. Hilary Duff, who played the Disney Channel character, gave birth to her first child with husband Mike Comrie, a baby boy named Luca Cruz, in March. Duff shared photos of her new baby with fans on Twitter, but admitted there’s no real story behind his unique name: “We don't have any rhyme or reason about why we chose that name,” Duff told “We had the names Cruz and Luca on our list with some others and decided at the very last minute what it was going to be … Afterwards we found out his name means ‘bringer of light.’ I love that.”

January Jones

It’s still unclear what people were more hung up on when Mad Men actress January Jones gave birth to her son, Xander, last September—whether she’d be as terrible a mother as her character Betty Draper, or who the identity of the boy’s father was. The latter question spawned several speculation lists but Jones, so far, has kept her lips sealed. What she has been more than open about however, are her odd post-pregnancy dietary choices: Jones has been consuming her own placenta in pill form. “I have a great doula who makes sure I’m eating well with vitamins and teas, and with placenta capsulation,” she told People. “Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins. It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas.”

Singer-songwriter Jewel gave birth to a baby boy named Kase Townes with her husband, Ty Murray, last July. It wasn’t an easy childbirth—Jewel underwent an emergency C-section. But Kase—who was named after Ty’s best friend and Jewel’s favorite singer, Townes Van Zandt—was born healthy anyway, to the relief of his parents. “I felt like somebody went to a cabinet, pulled out a perfect baby and handed him over,” Murray told People. “It’s overwhelming.”

“Raise Your Glass” singer Pink had new reason to celebrate when she gave birth to her first daughter, Willow Sage, last July. Pink and her motocross-champion husband, Carey Hart, seem to be enjoying their new roles as parents so far, with Pink inventing pet names for the girl on Twitter (“little angel muffin cake”) and the trio posing for pictures together just weeks after Willow’s birth.

Marion Cotillard

French actress Marion Cotillard just missed the deadline for last Mother’s Day, giving birth to her baby boy, Marcel, on May 19th, shortly after Mother’s Day. She and her longtime beau, actor-director Guillaume Canet, have been sharing parenting duties, with Marcel even getting in some early face time on Hollywood sets.

Ivanka Trump

We know she brings it in the board room but Ivanka Trump also brought a baby girl into being last July. Arabella Rose is the daughter of Trump and her husband of three years, Jared Kushner, the publisher of the New York Observer.

Lily Allen

English singer Lily Allen’s bad girl, paparazzi-punching days were over once she gave birth to daughter Ethel Mary. Allen has been married to Sam Cooper since last year (and changed her surname to Cooper as well) and has taken time off from making music in order to raise a family.

Kristin Davis

Turns out all those seasons on Sex and the City spent fretting over whether she’d ever have a baby were for naught. Kristin Davis, who played Charlotte on the hit HBO show, adopted a baby girl named Gemma Rose last year. “This is something I have wanted for a very long time,” she told People at the time. “Having this wish come true is even more gratifying than I ever had imagined. I feel so blessed.”
