Bristol Speaks Out on Abstinence and Teen Pregnancy

Greta Van Susteren’s special relationship with the Palin family continues to pay dividends. Below is her exclusive interview with Bristol, in which the 18-year-old describes abstinence as “not realistic at all.” Plus, a surprise appearance by the governor herself.

It was amusing to watch and hear Sara Palin take over Greta's interview with Bristol. I wish I had been a fly on the wall when Sara arrived at the interview and took over the Grandchild from the other Grandmother!

It will be interesting to see public reaction to her interview. My bet is the die-hard Palin base will of course find reason to praise her, thus proving that she could have done and said almost anything and still been defended by them. Because objectively she doesn't come across as even remotely articulate. She doesn't even sound like she knows what she's saying -- more like she's been told to say something but has no idea how to defend it. 'Uh, people should just wait 10 years because, uh, abstinence is the way to go but it's but not, uh, realistic, you know?" So is she for it or against it? She seems to be making the case for the opponents of asbstinence education as a form of birth control by admitting it doesn't work, beyond her own obvious example, but at the same time vaguely defending it because it's a talking point of her mom's party.

OK, sure it was Bristol's choice, but Sarah Palin should have expected to be criticized for her pro-life stance with a daughter who was/is clearly in over her head. The part about Bristol's education almost brings me to tears.
That was one of the main things I found bothersome about Sarah Palin's platform. This woman barely got her undergrad, and who in the hell is she to tell me I can't further my education to my desire if an unplanned pregnancy occured. I Hope Bristol makes it to college...she most likely will because she has a wealthy family, but most of us do not.

Bristol says she told her mom the day before the interview that she had invited FOX news up to Governor's mansion. Are we to believe that Gretta Van Sustern made plans to interview the 18 year old daughter of the former VP candidate - Alaskan Governor without consulting with Governor first? That doesn't sound right.

I wonder what they thought would be the benefit of having Bristol appear on TV. The overall impression is that she is very young and immature; her manner of speech is incredibly remedial. Too young to be a parent. Too young and unprepared to be shoved on TV.

Palin should be ashamed to pimp out her young daughter like this.

Would these morons please GO AWAY?!?!?!?!? I was watching MSNBC and they showed some of this Bristol interview and she really didn't want to say anything. She was riding the fence, but the media highlighted the words, "abstinence as 'not realistic at all.' " Gee, I wonder why.

Look, this is what it is...let's not jump all over Bristol...but let's not hold her up as some kind of role model either. The woman is 18. She has only been a mom for a couple months. I'll look forward to Greta's interview in ten years...or better yet, thirteen.

That's fine. You don't have to like what this girl is saying or the politics of her mother (which I don't either) but the viciousness that I am seeing in some of the other blogs is astounding......

These people are liberals? Left wing compassionates?

The city where I live has one of the highest teen pregnancy/teen STD rates in the country and has had for more than twenty-five years. The primary form of sex education here has been abstinence-only for more than twenty-five years. Saying this is unrealistic and doesn't work isn't endorsing promiscuity among teenagers. It is simply stating a fact. Abstinence only does not work. Period. Bristol Palin is only one of millions of examples of this failure.
The fact that the teen pregnancy/teen STD rate in the US is astronomically higher is not due to dilligence or informed choices: it is that getting pregnant is a little harder than it may seem. In other words, not everybody gets pregnant the first time, or the first ten times, they have sexual intercourse. And today's teens regard any other sexual activity besides vaginal intercourse as 'not really sex', so the statistics are misleading.
A comprehensisve approach to sex education, supporting informed and intelligent young people who are given the proper tools to make healthy choices is the only hope for dealing with this issue. Meanwhile, a little compassion for a young girl who has found herself the unwilling poster child for teen ignorance and naivete wouldn't be out of line. She didn't choose her parents, or their political views.

Personally I don't think sex education really matters at all. Were you taking advice on sex from your teachers? I sure as hell wasn't. There is so much more information on television and internet anyway. The problem is all these fundamentalist parents who pervert sex to their children because they belong to a mainstream cult. I don't see how we fix that.
PS: who cares what Bristol Palin has to say about anything. Her mother lost, that is a good thing, and the rest is all just soap opera BS that all the people complaining can't seem to get enough of.

Can Greta VonSustern be any more fawning? She's absolutely unctuous when she's in Wasilla with the Palin family.

I wanted her ask if Levi's family is involved with the new baby.

It also bothered me when Palin came in and she did not sit down but just stood there and hunched over, like she wanted to make a point that she was too busy to stay, but she also wanted to make absolutely sure she got her two cents in there too. And yeah...we heard you Sarah...you're SO proud of Bristol! Nothing wrong here, right? What does this woman take us for?

Bristol does not seem like the brightest bulb in the box, but I'm sure she can't wait to get out from under her mother's thumb either.

I want to assure everyone that researchers are working on a cure as I type, and have located the specific receptors in their brains which cause "liberals" to have a visceral hatred of Palin. The NIH effort - known as PDS Study #3 and conducted using non-invasive techniques on 'rats - should shortly result in a nasal spray they can take which will cause them to lead a more balanced life to the fullest extent possible.

Several examples of the affliction, including the names of sufferers, are here:
