Classic Cannes

As the 62nd Cannes Film Festival gets under way in the south of France, The Daily Beast looks back at the galaxy of stars who have lit up the Croisette. VIEW OUR GALLERY.

The 62nd Cannes Film Festival lineup is heavy on the auteurs—the latest by Pedro Almodovar, Lars von Trier, and Ang Lee will unspool during the glitzy showcase which runs from May 13 to 24. Inglorious Basterds by French favorite Quentin Tarantino is gunning for the prestigious Palme d’Or; it would be Tarantino’s second big prize after Pulp Fiction’s memorable debut in 1994. Other Cannes highlights through the years include La Dolce Vita, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, and sex, lies, and videotape. But real fans know the most eye-catching moments aren’t caught in theaters, but rather on the Croisette, where movie stars, rock stars, and topless starlets lounge near the Mediterranean.
