While overall violence in Iraq has decreased dramatically since 2007, lethal attacks are still scattered around Baghdad. On Sunday, five car bombs detonated in and around Baghdad killing six people and injuring 29. Four bombs exploded in the Shiite-populated parts of Baghdad itself, one near a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims. A roadside car bomb in Taji, a city 12 miles north of Baghdad, killed two and wounded four, according to the Interior Ministry. Last week, bomb attacks on Shiite pilgrims and police killed 110 people and posed a major challenge to security forces as the U.S. prepares to leave Iraq at the end of the year.
