Yemeni has charged the radical U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki with attempting to kill foreigners and being a member of al Qaeda. The announcement was made at the trial of Hisham Assem, who is charged with the October 6 shooting and killing of a Frenchman at a local oil compound. Assem told investigators that al-Awlaki told him foreigners were “occupiers” and sent him tapes preaching for their deaths. Authorities say al-Awlaki, who was born in New Mexico, is hiding in the mountainous regions of Yemen with family and friends, but he remains on a U.S. list of militants to kill or capture.
