12 Arrested in U.K. Terror Probe

British anti-terrorism police arrested 12 men aged 17 to 28 early Monday morning in England and Wales on suspicion of planning or instigating a terrorist attack. The group was arrested under the controversial Terrorism Act of 2000, which granted broad new powers to the police in anti-terrorism efforts. The British home secretary was briefed on the raids before they took place, but the metropolitan police would not detail the accusations against the youths. "This is a large scale, pre-planned and intelligence-led operation involving several forces," the assistant commissioner said. "The operation is in its early stages, so we are unable to go into detail at this time about the suspected offenses." Sky News says the arrests are unrelated to warnings of a Mumbai-style attack in Europe over the summer.
