Defense Secretary Robert Gates is the latest to point a finger at Pakistan, saying that “somebody knew” that Osama bin Laden was hiding out in Abbottabad. But he added that so far there was no evidence he had collaborators within the top ranks of government. “We don’t know whether it was retired people, whether it was low level—pure supposition on our part,” he said. Both Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen said that despite calls for revenge, the humiliation endured by the country’s security forces was probably the most potent punishment.
