Ohio Police Kill 49 Exotic Animals

Investigators walk around a barn as carcasses lay on the ground at The Muskingum County Animal Farm Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, in Zanesville, Ohio. Police with assault rifles stalked a mountain lion, grizzly bear and monkey still on the loose after authorities said their owner apparently freed dozens of wild animals and then killed himself. Police in Ohio say they have accounted for all 56 exotic animals that escaped a private zoo after their owner opened their cages. That mostly means dead, as only a grizzly bear, two monkeys, and three leopards survived. The other animals—18 tigers, 17 lions, 6 black bears, 3 mountain lions, 2 grizzly bears, 2 wolves, and a baboon—were all killed, and a monkey was found dead. The animals' owner, Terry Thompson, shot himself after he released them. The six surviving animals were taken to the Columbus Zoo.
