The GOP’s Afghanistan Incoherence

A NATO helicopter flies over the site of a bomb blast in Kabul October 29, 2011. At least four people were killed when a suicide car bomber attacked a convoy of foreign soldiers in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Saturday, officials said, with an unspecified number of NATO-led troops among other casualties.

Expect Republican candidates to seize on the weekend's attack in Afghanistan, which killed nine Americans, as a way to assail President Obama's commitment to the war. But don't be fooled: The Daily Beast's Peter Beinart slams the GOP field for being even more incoherent about Afghanistan than the Obama administration. The president has been slow to act on his conviction that the war there is pointless. But the Republican contenders haven't the slightest idea if they would do more or less of what he’s doing. “There’s no advantage for them in pushing for a rapid, and potentially ugly and humiliating, withdrawal now, when they can defer the discussion until after the election.”
