The U.S. justice department filed suit against South Carolina on Monday over a new immigration law passed this summer, declaring it an unconstitutional interference with federal authority. Officials also argued that the new law could lead to the harassment and detention of authorized visitors— both immigrants and citizens. The Justice Department filed similar suits in Arizona and Alabama, where the immigration laws were both blocked and remain on appeal. “It is understandable that communities remain frustrated with the broken immigration system, but a patchwork of state laws is not the solution and will only create problems,” said Attorney Genearl Eric Holder in a written statement.
