South Carolina’s former governor Mark Sanford is now officially engaged to the Argentine women he visited while in office. Sanford’s liaison grabbed national attention in 2009 when it was revealed that he had met up with María Belén Chapur in her home country after telling his staff that he was hiking on the Appalachian trail. After rumors of the pending nuptials made the Internet, Sanford confirmed the engagement in a statement to CNN. “Yes, we are engaged, and I’m both happy and excited for what that means,” Sanford said. “I have long expressed my feelings for her; she’s a wonderful person.”
