It's a tough day for the Mack household. For the first time in her 14-year political career, California Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Palm Springs) has been defeated. Her Democratic challenger Raul Ruiz, an emergency-room doctor, eked out a 51.4 percent to 48.6 percent victory over Sonny Bono's widow, who had held the seat since 1988. This despite her campaign's attack that Ruiz was a "radical" for participating in a Native American protest of Thanksgiving in the 90s. Meanwhile, Mack's husband, Connie Mack IV, lost a bruising Senate battle across the country in Florida.
