The BBC has appointed 61-year-old Tony Hall, a former director of news at the BBC, as the company’s new director-general. He will succeed George Entwistle, who resigned this month after only 54 days over his handling of the scandal involving late broadcaster Jimmy Savile’s alleged sexual abuse of children. Hall is currently the chief executive of the Royal Opera House and he will start his new position at the BBC in March. The Chairman of the BBC Trust said that Hall is "the right person to lead the BBC out of its current crisis and help rebuild public trust in the organization."
