Obama Sworn In

Welcome back, Mr. President. Obama took the ceremonial oath of office at 11:51 a.m. on Monday, flanked by Vice President Biden, first lady Michelle Obama, first daughters Malia and Sasha Obama, House Speaker John Boehner, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, members of the Supreme Court, and more—and around 600,000 bystanders who cheered “Obama” as the president took the podium. Myrlie Evers-Williams, the widow of slain civil-rights leader Medgar Evers, delivered the prayer, the first time a woman has done so. Sonia Sotomayor, who was nominated by Obama, administered the oath of office to the vice president—who refrained from calling himself the president this time around—while Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath to the president. And the whole affair wasn't flub-free: Obama slightly stumbled over the line "and the office of the President of the United States." Oops.
