Nelson Mandela was released from the hospital Sunday morning after spending the night there to undergo tests. The 94-year-old was hospitalized for three weeks in December for a lung infection and underwent a procedure for gallstones. Mandela’s ill health comes as the country has been soul-searching while his party, the African National Congress, has been split. While poverty has long plagued the country, South Africa has lately faced a number of setbacks, including several high-profile violent incidents. Just a few days ago, Mandela’s wife appeared at a memorial service for a Mozambican taxi driver found dead in a Johannesburg jail after allegedly being dragged from a police vehicle, and she warned of “big trouble” if police are responsible for the driver’s death.
