Driven by heat and high winds, a series of wildfires are spreading across Colorado, and have together destroyed over 100 homes and other buildings. Seven thousand people north of Colorado Springs have been forced to flee the flames, and a 1,000 prison inmates have been evacuated. Wildfires are also burning in New Mexico, Oregon, and California, spreading fire-fighting crews in the West so thin that the U.S. Forest Service announced Defense Department cargo planes were on the way to help. As many as 9,000 more people are on standby to be evacuated in Colorado.
