Journalist Michael Hastings died on Tuesday morning in a car accident, according to a statement from Buzzfeed’s editor in chief, Ben Smith. He was 33 years old. “We are shocked and devastated by the news that Michael Hastings is gone. Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about anything he covered from wars to politicians,” the statement read. Hastings is perhaps best known for the scathing profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal published in Rolling Stone in 2010, which ended in the Army general’s resignation. Hastings leaves behind a wife, writer Elise Jordan.
