Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, patron of the arts, socialite, and friend of Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, passed away on Monday at age 103. Mellon and her philanthropist husband, Paul, donated more than 1,000 works by historically renowned artists to the National Gallery of Art. They also funded the addition of the gallery’s East Building in 1970. Mellon was also known for her keen eye for architecture and interior design: she redesigned the White House Rose Garden, designed her own 4,000-acre estate, Oak Springs, and Jackie O.’s home. Mellon is survived by a son, two stepchildren, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
