Nearly 50 people are dead after militants attacked the Kenyan coastal town of Mpeketoni. The government said the Somali extremist group al-Shabab was to blame for the attacks. On Sunday night, gunmen launched the especially gruesome attacks while residents were trying to enjoy the World Cup. The Associated Press reported that some of the men watching the games at the Breeze View Hotel were separated and gunned down in front of the women. Witnesses said the militants also threw grenades into a police station. Kenya has been under high alert recently with fears al-Shabab would launch an attack. This incident is the most deadly in Kenya since September, when four gunmen from al-Shabab targeted an upscale mall in Nairobi and slaughtered 67 people.
