An attack on Monday by a gang armed with knives in China’s troubled Xinjiang region left dozens dead, according to the Chinese government, which only reported the attack Tuesday. Police hit the attackers as well as dozens of Uighur and Han Chinese civilians in response, with some reports based on local sources putting the number of dead at about 100. The attack came at the end of Ramadan, which Chinese authorities had pressured Muslims in the country not to observe. According to the state-run news agency Xinhua, the gang first hit the town of Elixku, hitting civilians as well as targeting government offices, a police station, and police vehicles.
